This morning's Balloon launch over Long Island reveals something interesting! Usually -22C at 5000' is near record cold at that level over us... But Not only it was -22.1°C (-7.8°F) at 5000' ..... It was -22.1°C at 2500' as well and that's close to historic cold at this level.
And It looks like the 3° low for Islip and Bridgeport at the surface is a record for the day. Todays Min temp map.
1pm. Bright Blue and only 10°F here. Water temps do nothing when the airmass aloft is so cold. In fact you can see the Street clouds over the Atlantic. Cold clouds!
Sometimes timing of just 6 hours will ruin things. The coldest airmass was leaving the region, I wonder if it was 6hrs slower if you would of done it. Or its an UHI thing like Ed's Mountain said. Could be combo of both these.
I think it is a combination of both . Chicago's UHI has greatly expanded since 1985 so the -27F at ORD as the all time low will probably never be broken.
But many areas outside the UHI had all time record lows broken this morning.
Sugar Grove is a regional airport just outside Aurora city limits. They got down to -32F

MDW's max yesterday was -9F/-22.8C just after midnight. ORD's was -10F/-23.3C just after midnight. MDW's record low max was on Dec 24th 1983 at -10F/-23.3C and ORD's was on the same day at -11F/-23.9C
Northwestern Illinois broke all time records this morning
Significant winter weather on top for Alberta. Lots of snow followed by the first real cold outbreak of the season. Check out the snow to liquid ratios!
Snow accumulations as per GFS assuming a 10:1 ratio. Amounts could be much higher in places if 25:1 pans out.
Unfortunately the blast is getting watered down here as the initial trough digs too far west...results in cold air splitting off from the low. Now just looks like a typical moderated backdoor arctic shot...pretty typical of the last decade or so. I wonder how long it will be before we see a true arctic blast from the north again.
Well I am never doing this again. A lot of my friends are from cold climates, the likes of like Oslo, Guleph, Chicago, Minneapolis , and Provo. The guy close to Minneapolis talked to me saying -31F/-35C isn't that cold without wind and said he was in a t-shirt for a few minutes in like -26F/-32C. Basically told me that he has been through much worse many times. So I decided to up the ante, and I walked for a short period of time outside in -31F/-35C with a t-shirt, long pants, and flip flops. No socks, no gloves, no hat. I regret that decision.
LOL up to 56 degrees in parts of the Chicago area by Monday, after parts of our area were -30 below zero today.
