It's not exactly a polar vortex but the combination of a closed upper-level low over Vancouver Island and that blocking high over Greenland is poised to give Alberta its first sustained stretch of cold weather this winter starting this weekend.
The cold air looks to spread back east by the following weekend. Chicago is definitely in the firing line again but how much further east and south will it go?
12z euro was quite chilly for the SW BC coast. 850mb temps dip to about -15C with a strong Arctic front descending from central BC.
Quite the intense cold pool modeled to blast through northern and central BC. Haven't seen an arctic blast like this in a while; have to go back to Nov 2010 for something similar. Whether this will verify is still in the cards but it sure looks promising.
Welp, it didn't make it to the -40 mark here. Only Park Rapids did. But it was still pretty cold here though.
