Significant winter weather on top for Alberta. Lots of snow followed by the first real cold outbreak of the season. Check out the snow to liquid ratios!

SIGNIFICANT WEATHER DISCUSSION ISSUED BY THE PRAIRIE AND ARCTIC STORM
PREDICTION CENTRE OF ENVIRONMENT CANADA AT 7:00 AM CST THURSDAY
JANUARY 31 2019.

...

DISCUSSION...

ALBERTA AND NORTHWEST TERRITORIES...
LATEST WATER VAPOR SHOWS THE ATMOSPHERIC RIVER STILL FIRMLY AIMED FOR CENTRAL ALBERTA. RADAR ALREADY SHOWS SNOW BEGINNING AT THE ELBOW AND THIS WILL JUST SPREAD ACROSS TO THE EDMONTON AREA THIS AFTERNOON. NORTHEASTERLY INJECTION OF LOW LEVEL COLD AIR WILL BOOST THE SNOW TO LIQUID WATER RATIONS FROM 10 TO 1 TO 25 TO 1 OVER THE GRANDE CACHE AND WHITECOURT REGIONS AS THE SNOW CONTINUES. BY THE TIME THE SNOW ENDS EARLY SATURDAY, TOTAL SNOWFALL IN THOSE REGIONS COULD REACH 50 CM. IN A WIDER EAST TO WEST BAND EXTENDING FROM THE ELBOW TOWARDS LLOYDMINSTER, TOTAL AMOUNTS IN THE SAME TIME FRAME WILL BE FROM 15 TO 30 CM. THE SNOWFALL WILL BE BANDED IN STRUCTURE ESPECIALLY IN THE WINTER STORM WARNED AREAS SO THE TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS BE NOT BE UNIFORM ACROSS THE ENTIRE SYNOPTIC REGIONS.

AFTER THE SNOW ENDS ON SATURDAY NIGHT, SKIES WILL CLEAR AS THE FULL BRUNT OF THE ARCTIC AIR TAKES OVER. IN MANY AREAS OVERNIGHT LOWS WILL PLUNGE INTO THE MINUS THIRTIES AND DAYTIME HIGHS WILL ONLY RECOVER INTO THE MID MINUS TWENTIES. THIS COLD PATTERN WILL CONTINUE THROUGH NEXT WEEK.

...
Snow accumulations as per GFS assuming a 10:1 ratio. Amounts could be much higher in places if 25:1 pans out.

Here are some impressive readings I see

-45F (-43C) in International Falls
-42F (-41C) in Brainerd
-38F (-39C) in Lone Rock Wisconsin - same latitude as Milwaukee
-33F (-36C) in Savanna IL - same latitude as Chicago

Seems like they (slightly) overestimated the cold in Chicago, but really underestimated it in Wisconsin and Minnesota! Also kinda sucks that Chicago's record bid was interrupted by a high in the middle of the night

We have four 50F+ highs in a row starting from Monday next week! Not to take away anything from the cold, but nice to have some warmth to look forward to lol

And here are the temps

reported low for Chicopee is -8°F (which seems too low IMO, maybe a local frost hollow thing) but where's the -11°F from?

Midway indeed has been built up for generations but ORD has seen significant urban growth since the 1980s. I still remember seeing corn fields in Schaumburg which is just northwest of ORD back in the 80s. Now it's all homes and strip malls

But it looks as if the really cold temps stop just north and west of the city overnight

-8F temp at my house with the lowest wind chill I measured as -32F at 8 pm last night, as low as -18F temp in the Laurel Highlands of PA, MD, and WV. Impressive cold, but not quite as cold as last year's -11F I dropped to

This doesn't happen too often .

Of course he a climate change denier and very very right wing politically. very religious also. he is a weirdo.

and his agenda is global cooling lol.

He never ever brings up warmer than normal areas, or the summer in Australia this year, or heat records being broken etc.

I wonder if Chicago this summer breaks an all time record high, will he blame the UHI? Of course he would. He does it already.

Ignore Bastardi.
