If the warming trend continues in the PNW, Portland will have a Csa climate in 20-30 years. We’re already surprisingly close, and the past five years were all individually Csa.

GFS is showing a big downpour coming to the PNW on Feb 1-2 and very cold air on Feb 3-4. So close!

January 1969 in Edmonton was like the stuff of legend. I will never see a January like it in my lifetime, that's for sure.

Average high high -23.5°C; average low -34.8°C. Lowest temperature -45.0°C. Nine nights where the temperature dropped to -40°C or lower including 5 in a row from the 20-24th. Twenty five consecutive days where the temperature failed to rise above -20°C. Five days where the temperature failed to rise above -30°C including four in a row from the 27-30th with 124 consecutive hours below -30°C. Here's the daily weather for Edmonton that month; columns are max, min, mean, etc in degrees Celsius.

Source: Daily Data Report for January 1969 - Climate - Environment and Climate Change Canada

Adding insult to injury, apparently December and February were cold as well.

Averages for other Canadian cities for January 1969 in degrees Celsius:
Vancouver 0.1/-5.9
Calgary -19.7/-29.5
Winnipeg -16.4/-27.4
Toronto -2.1/-10.8
Montreal -4.1/-12.9

Calgary colder than Winnipeg! So the cold was definitely directed further west at that time. I've tried tracking down a summary of the events; the closest I could find was this paper:

ftp://ftp.library.noaa.gov/docs.lib/...97-04-0351.pdf

Apparently there was exceptionally strong blocking from an upper level ridge over Greenland as shown in the first figure from that paper. The rest, as they say, is history.

Good find! These are the kind of cold anomalies the east saw in Feb 2015. I believe Toronto was close to 10C below average for the entire month.

January 1950 was even colder than 1969 in Vancouver. YVR averaged -2.9C/-9.7C that month. The average temp was -6.3C!

When looking at our history, months which averaged below freezing were pretty common. From 1920 to 1950, a 30 year span, Vancouver recorded seven months which averaged below freezing....1929, 1930, 1936, 1937, 1943, 1949 and 1950.

In our most recent 30 year span (1988-2018) only one month has averaged below 0C in Vancouver....January 1993 with an average temp of -0.4C.

The GFS has been fairly consistent at showing at least some snow for northwest LA mid-week, so I'm thinking something could materialize; not sure if I would get anything in Alexandria. Maybe some additional shots at getting something over the next couple of weeks.

The latest GFS run showing best amounts of the day so far.
