It looks like we're going to go through this so-called cold spell without having the temperature drop below -20°C at all. Back up to close to the freezing mark by Sunday--more than 20 degrees warmer than Winnipeg.

Cold air is definitely favouring the east this year.
Cold air has favoured the east pretty much all of the past decade. Not just chilly at times, but multiple waves of historic cold throughout the past few years. Meanwhile the west just gets warmer and warmer

For sure.

When I look at older climate normals, like 1941-1970, for places in the west,
and compare them with 1981-2010, there is a significant warm up in the west,
Calgary, Edmonton, you name it...even Winnipeg. But in the east only a tiny bit
of warming to almost none ....Ottawa...Montreal ...etc...

The average january high and low for Ottawa and Montreal is almost the same as
decades ago.

The last below below average January in Edmonton was 2011. Since then, every single one has been above average--sometimes significantly so. This month is on track to be the same.

And that's compared to the 1981-2010 averages which themselves are significantly warmer than earlier. Mean temperatures for January this decade are a full 4.0°C warmer than the 1961-1990 means.

Not so for poor Montreal and Ottawa ...both are about -6C avg high -14C avg low for january,
no different than decades ago ...in fact Montreal’s average january low was a touch warmer

Calgary average january high is almost at 0C ....used to be in the -3C or -4C range,
Lethbridge average january high is now above freezing...used to be -2C.

If here in the east had that kind of warming Toronto would have an average january high about 1C
and Ottawa -3C...

We've had at least as many above normal months as we've had below normal during the winter these past few years.

What we have been seeing is large gyrations between extremes of cold and warmth these past few winters.

Here is a comparison of the Mean temperatures for the winters between 2011 and 2018, with the 1981-2010 normals for ORD. Pretty big year to year swings with January averaging a little bit above the 30 year normal, February down about a degree and December up nearly 4F these past 9 years when compared to the 1981-2010 normals! So January's positive departure basically cancels out February's negative departure and your left with December being +4F which means the winters are warmer when compared with the 1981-2010 means.

Winter Mean temps 2011-2018: 27.5F
Winter Mean temps 1981-2010: 26.4F

This looks bigtime cold on the way

Minneapolis has warmed more like the prairies than in Eastern Canada... from 20/4 to 23/8 in January... Does the persistent snow in places like Montréal initially limit warming?

So far 3-8" inches of system snow as of 7AM, but lake effect will certainly up the totals for Midway and ORD this afternoon and evening.

As much as I can’t believe it, Portland has broken a daily record for rainfall! 1.11” of rain fell in Portland yesterday, beating the previous record of 1.06” set in 2017.
