From those temp anomalies....it looks as if the SSW just makes the west warmer.

Quite troublesome weather today.

3 am, including rainfall:

12 am estimation (in 10 minutes time) today based upon the 11.30 am readings:

Complete reversal. Now a lot of ice outside instead, since the rain turned into freezing weather for most of Southern Sweden during the morning. Credit to the SMHI for calling these crazy "reversed" diurnals close to a week in advance. I was really skeptical it would be this extreme (3°C overnight and -4°C with sun right now)!

It depends where the Polar Vortex migrates to, but yeah usually it ends up in the eastern half of the US

Light snow very early this morning has changed to rain. Temperature is up to 34 degrees so at least the roads weren't icy for rush hour. Just wet. Now just overcast with some rain this morning until the snowstorm arrives on Saturday but I feel like they keep weakening it, or at least the rain/snow line keeps moving north. We've gone from forecasts at the beginning of the week calling for 8-12 inches to the NWS this morning just saying 4-6 inches here on the north side of Indy to 1-2 inches further south, though Weather Underground is still trying for 5-8 inches. I was getting excited for midweek next week for another snowstorm but again Weather Underground has taken us from 8-12 inches a couple days ago to just 1-3 inches now as the midweek storm is appearing warmer. The Weather Channel also has taken us down from a storm total 6-10 inches to just 1-3 inches. Boo to this winter!!

That actually looks like a fairly anemic cold outbreak. Is it too soon to call it a bust for you and start looking forward to round 2?

Right now, this morning at 9 am Eastern Time there are vast distances of ocean air below freezing all the way to east of Nantucket and Southern New England. The vast majority of 42°N ocean air is below -4°C.

Damn wtf does China never get cold anomalies in winter??? So a SSW doesn't do anything to them. I hope global warming breaks down that Siberian High, which I heard could be happening, then they will pay the piper.
