Really? Come on, you guys have had many historic blasts in recent years.
I was referring to "as cold" as the GFS was indicating yesterday, meaning 486mb thickness values down to the north-central part of the US. Today's runs of the model are definitely more moderate compared to that for most areas.
It’s officially been over a year since I’ve had a high temperature in the 20’s....366 days. Not since January 15th, 2018 which had a high of 26°F. Last February and the first half of this winter were both mild and snowless.
Lowest high temperature during this period was 30°F (lol) on both January 18th and November 22nd.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY

An airmass of Siberian origin is crossing the pole right now and will deliver the region the coldest air of the season thus far. With wind chills likely to be below zero, at least for inland and northern zones into Monday morning. Temperatures will be hard
pressed to reach the lower 20s at the coast during the day on Monday with the new ECMWF run forecasting below 500 dm thickness to the coast by 18z Monday. Therefore windchills would be hovering in the near zero to the single digits for most places during the day on Monday. As the winds diminish Monday night should be the coldest night of the season with respect to the actual air temperatures even though the wind chills should abate into Tuesday morning.
So much spread with the low temperatures early next week. NWS going with 14°F, everyone else saying single digits. Depends on what this storm does I guess, if we go snowless like the NWS is suggesting I could see their forecast verifying, if we get accumulating snow it’ll be tricky.
I’m trying to recall a time when (or if) temperatures dropped into the single digits without snow cover, outside of the pine barrens. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
Tomorrow weather forecast: 6C Chilly with a full day of sunshine
