We got our first snow last night here. We have probably 10 cm on the ground right now, although it's slowly turning into slush on the sidewalks. No big deal since it was planned in advance, no traffic issues except for the hills. Not sure how much they got up there.
Nice to see snow in december for once. Next few days should remain around freezing point, but the cold airmass looks like it's gonna be replaced by old good humid cold with plenty of fog.
According to AccuWeather, high temperatures in my area will range from 49°F to 63°F through the end of the December, and low temperatures will range from 35°F to 42°F. The average high and low temperatures in my area on Christmas are 54°F and 34°F, respectively. Overall, the high temperatures are forecast to be near normal, but low temperatures are forecast to be slightly above normal. Like you said, it'll be mild, but there won't be a torch. Thank God. I got torched two Christmases in a row (2015-2016), and I hated it.
I'm in Central Alabama, which in the broad scheme of things, is very comparable to y'all in Athens, GA.
As a firm believer that it should be cold at Christmas, like you, I had pretty much lost all faith in traditional Christmas weather after the horrific blowtorches of 2015 and 2016. Thankfully, we rebounded last Christmas with a very nice day in the 40s, with a low around freezing. Granted, it was no 1983 or 1989 (look those up! ) but highs in the 40s, lows around freezing are definitely respectable.
All the models seem to indicate that this Christmas Eve/Christmas will be warmer than normal, but certainly no blowtorch. We are still a week out. I have noticed that this time of year, when it stays cloudy all day, the actual high temp ends up outkicking the coverage (from a cold perspective). Case in point - this past Saturday, the high was forecast to be around 60, but the Sun never came out, so it stayed chilly and 53, 54 all day. Perhaps the same will hold true for the 24th and 25th.
Looks like right about a 0% chance of a white Christmas here in Indianapolis this year. Granted, we typically only have a 25-30% of a white Christmas on any given year but temps look to stay mostly in the 40s for the next week. A chance of rain right now Christmas day. Maybe mix with snow? But not likely to have anything stick at the moment.

I don't know about you guys but it's been super cloudy this year. I would say it feels more than usual. Where's my Vitamin D supplement.
I'm truly believing this has something to do it.
