Rochester's most extreme low is -30C (22F) Feb 9, 1934.
Save the link. Here is Rochester's January temps. Low of -1°F there. Normal is +18F

Yes the worst is over of course. No way we get another cold spell like this one, but I think more cold is on the way after this weekend's massive warm up. By next weekend we'll be quite cold again and the Euro weeklies say it's gonna last much of February and likely into March. Maybe no spring this year?

The no wind did help, also we may be acclimating to these temps. Now 30s will feel Tropical for you. lol. Surprised to even hear you say "didn't feel bad" at 17F.

You have to be thankful for these swings because these swings are what give "juice" to the air so when the next cold front comes it can squeeze snow out.

Eh...not really. It's not the fronts that do it. We don't need a full ridge or moisture from a front to get snowstorms. Southern New England and NYC pretty much need a coastal storm for good snowstorms. Need troughs centered over Southeast. Just like when the ridge was parked out west we were doing great with "winter" and snow. Don't need the swings. Just a trough that waves back and forth in the East.

We got about 5 cm (2") of snow here last night, and it's still falling. However, the temperature is above freezing, so I don't think it's really adding to the snow totals. It also got down to -5.4°C (22°F) Wednesday night, and there was beautiful frost the following morning.

But a trough that waves back and forth would not happen if North America was larger. A semi-permanent high pressure would be present over CT. It would be consistently cold but never much snow if any. The air would become stagnant with the inversion and you would get copious amounts of smog like China and you would probably have to wear a pollution mask anytime you went outside. And hopefully you'd have a forced air heating system with filters to clean the air out instead of a radiant system or using a wood stove as otherwise there would be no way to clean the air in your house. And no opening windows ever as that would let pollution in, you'd need to rely on your forced air heating system to clean the air with fan mode always on. The Pacific and Gulf of Mexico saved the north! They interact with the arctic air, keeping it at bay and ensuring that it never "takes over" for long periods.

We got 4 inches of snow here on the north side of Indy last night. The NWS on the opposite side of the city officially recorded 1.6 inches. Interstates are just a mess this morning. Most surface streets I took weren't bad but it looks like every highway in town is jammed up and completely snow covered still.
