Correct!

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has said that he is confident that Democrats will have enough votes to extend unemployment benefits as soon as a successor is named for Senator Robert Byrd (D-W.VA), who died Monday.

The Senate reconvenes on July 12 -- but West Virginia's Democratic governor, Joe Manchin, told The Associated Press that he does not expect to start searching for a replacement until Wednesday (July 7), after Byrd is buried in Arlington, Va.

Last Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) proposed a two-month extension of jobless benefits, offset by stimulus funds, but Reid objected. For those keeping track, that was reported to be the seventh time that Democrats turned down Republican proposals to extend the most recent eligibility cut-off dates for federal unemployment benefits with existing funds (as opposed to emergency funding that would add to the deficit).

Ben Nelson said that he didnt want to add to the deficit he didnt handedly block this other ppl could of step up an sided with the dems. Yes it sucks the a Democrat didnt side with all the rest of them but that happens in politics.

Reid rejected Mitch's extension because he knew in 2 weeks when they come back the extension that will pass will be good for 4+ months.

So we need to do so research on whether he can appoint or not. By the way, CBS's leading story was on the 22 million unemployed Americans and how the Senate went on vacation without extending the deadline. CBS sided with Reid on this one and slammed the Repub's.

Senator Robert Byrd lies in repose in Senate - NYPOST.com

Since CBS News seems to be taking notice of the unemployment problem here in the USA why not write them about your personal story? That includes the ones that were thrown under the bus back in Feb.

Okay question : What are the odds that this will be resolved completely when they get back ?

What are the odds we will still be in the same boat after the July 12th break ?

Well if Senator Byrd would not have passed away, it would have passed Weds. night. They had 59 votes out of the sixty votes needed this even with Nelson voting against the extension. So you draw your own conclusion but until I see Obama signing it I am curiously hopeful.

Wow, well perhaps because it was for a whole two month extension which would be the typical GOP "fix". Exactly which economic indicators are pointing toward everything being better in two months?

For those keeping track within the same parallel universe:

- The June employment numbers are in: The US lost 125,000 jobs.
- By the end of July, 3 million Americans will have lost their unemployment
benefits, many received 26 weeks prior to being cut off, many more less
were on less than 52 weeks.
For each additional week 200,000 more will lose benefits.
- Currently, for every available job opening there are 6 job applicants as a
national average. There are many areas where it is 10 to 1.
-The Emergency EU extension funding adds .01% to the deficit that the
Republicans have suddenly become so concerned about. One tenth of one
percent. Now there's a message to the American people. You ain't worth it!

If any of these GOP jackasses are re-elected it'd be a travesty.

But, the only problem is, it's a band-aid....it will get some ppl. by for a couple of months, if it does pass, but then everyone is back to square zero after that. Then what happens for the next year or two while ppl. are still scrambling to get jobs?

They're all jackasses. However, this latest debacle falls squarely on the shoulders on Ben Nelson(D).
