Not a good idea to compare NYC to anything. Chicago would be the closest to Houston, but even that area has quite a few big and unique suburbs.

Houston is the only city it's size that ate up most of it's poor little suburban areas before they had a chance to become something.
Nope, LA is definitely more like Houston. LA is huge, at over four million people. The next closest city, Long Beach, is at around 400K. This is different from DFW, where it's Dallas at 1.8M, Fort Worth at over 700K, and then Arlington at 350K, with a couple more in the 200K range. The cities are much closer together. LA is the unquestioned king in its metro. Long Beach and Anaheim in the LA area are no different than The Woodlands or Sugar Land in the Houston area. There will always be suburbs with their own identities and business districts in a large metro. Not to mention the huge unincorporated areas in LA, like East Los Angeles. Same thing with the Chicago area. It's the unquestioned king city in its metro, with a population of 2.8M. No other city in Chicagoland has over 200K. NYC, too.

That's why I say they are more like Houston. Just because they have big suburbs of their own (due to their size as a metro), does not mean those areas are like DFW. DFW's only comparison is really the Bay Area. Now, if there wasn't a Fort Worth, and Dallas had all of Fort Worth's population, but there were still all these suburbs around here, THEN it would be like LA or Chicago.

If L.A has 4 mill in the city, the metro has over 9 mill, Where is the other 5? You do the math! Dallas has around almost 2 mill in their city then they have 4 million more in the metro is that sooooo bad>?

Same for New York compare the city's 8 plus mill vs the metro's 18 plus mill? that's a big difference so why is Dallas so bad<? Enlighten me please

How would you explain San Fransico and Oakland>? Right around the Corner from each other but one is bigger than the other and ummmm from my understanding they are closer than ummm lets say Dallas and Ft worth. Sad to say but again no one get's on them uhhh

Exactly. I wouldn't want our attractions to be shared amongst our suburbs. I would want Houston to remain as centralized as it is, just with a smaller city proper than it has, and let some of these mostly bedroom communities take care of themselves.

At the end of the day, it would be more like Chicago or Atlanta. These cities make up a smaller fraction of their metro area, yet the overwhelming majority of everything "important" is located in the city proper.

^^Which is exactly why I've said Dallas has a lot in common with Detroit because like Detroit, Dallas has to compete with it's suburbs for amenities and the way the area has been built has sucked the life out of the central city/downtown area. The only other city I can think of that is somewhat similar is Phoenix, but Phoenix isn't as landlocked by it's burbs the way Dallas is.

Not only that, you have a nearby secondary city (Ft. Worth) that has better cultural venues and museums as well.

Anyone who thinks Dallas by far isn't the most urban, powerful, wealthiest, influential, and cultural city in this region is daft. Fort Worth is the only over relevant city in the discussion. Not Irving. Not Plano. Not Arlington. Yes, Dallas has big, overpopulated suburbs. Houston doesn't. At the end of the day, just because your address still says "Houston" when you live 20 miles outside of downtown doesn't mean that you're in any less of a suburban wasteland than you are living in Arlington or Carrollton. Both Dallas and Houston are overrun by sprawl. The only difference is where municipality lines are drawn.

Dallas has been addressing the issue of high office vacancy in the Central Business District by making infrastructure improvements and encouraging condo conversions in some of the older buildings. The Woodall Rodgers Park Deck will also help to make the CBD more connected to the faster growing Uptown area.

The lack new office space in Dallas' CBD is a big problem when having to contend with the likes of, Uptown, Plano or Las Colinas. The older Class A space simply cannot compete with brand new Class A in the other areas I've mentioned. If the CBD can be turned into a more attractive enviornment to live and play, the businesses will return.

In the long term, Dallas' core in it's entirety should be in good shape.

Stoneclaw/C2H (ComingtoHouston)

Yes Stoneclaw/C2H (ComingtoHouston), Houston does need help. A lot of financial help to overcome the mountain of bond debt that is slowly crushing the city and county. The city you live in has mortgaged much of its future finanacial stability on projects like stadiums instead of focussing on infrastructure improvements. Right now, Houston is having to repurpose funds from one area to another just to stay afloat.

How's the University Line coming along?
Let's use our transit taxes for transit - Houston Chronicle

Yet, all some of you guys can talk about is the lack of stadiums within Dallas, while not even noticing the potential budgetary disaster looming in your own city/county.

What's more, no matter what Jerry Jones might have of said about how Dallas dropped the ball on capturing Cowboys Stadium, he really had no intentions on Jerry World ever coming to Dallas. He was not going to lose out on the $10s (if not $100s) of millions in parking revenues at his new stadium over the span of the lease. Any stadium built within Dallas would have been connected to light rail.

If he wanted his Cowboys in Dallas, it would have happened. Period.
