The vaccines are 100% effective against hospitalization and death once you have given them time to do their work in your body.

Where are you getting that from? I do not believe we have any such data on these latest variants.

I'm not convinced either. Approximately 40% of new cases are variants, and I believe the % is expected to keep going up. The current vaccines should protect you against the UK variant, but I don't know about the others (Brazil, New York, etc.).

I think it's irresponsible to say 100% effective.

We can't say that they are 100% effective, especially with a constantly evolving virus that wants to outsmart them. Nevertheless - these vaccines are a miracle of science. So many different vaccines with good to excellent performance, developed independently by many different labs in many different countries...Truly a miracle.

Largest US cluster of P1 (Brazil) variants is in MA - over 50 cases (the first case was found just about 3 weeks ago). https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local...riant/2346287/
Brazil is a hot mess, as are some of the Canadian states where this variant has taken off (British Columbia is setting pandemic records and locking back down, as are other Canadian provinces.) In the meantime, MA and the region is wide open, with Easter get togethers, and I think many schools are opening tomorrow (?).

Whoever thought it was a good idea to open schools full time in person the day after Easter deserves an award (and yes, lots of awards for politicians this past year). Perhaps this school outbreak in Barnstable last week is related to the P1 variant ? https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local...surge/2340873/

Yep, 90% of MA schools are opening tomorrow.

Majority of Massachusetts elementary students return to in-person learning on Monday

"The majority of elementary school students will return to in-person learning in Massachusetts on Monday.
About 90 percent of school districts in the Commonwealth are set to return to classroom learning.

More than 50 districts were granted waivers by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The timing comes as more than 800 students and 240 staffers tested positive for COVID-19 in the past week, the largest number this academic school year.

School officials insist that schools are “very safe.” "

Does anybody know what percentage of cases in Cape Cod are due to P1? 50+ P1 cases out of how many sequences? This should never be reported as a raw number, which is (almost) meaningless...though of course it's really bad news that MA is leading the nation in this regard, considering what we know about his variant.

Err. BC is 17 per 100,000. Massachusetts is 28 per 100,000. Your hyperbole doesn’t align with the data. BC has real public health. They just pulled the plug on Whistler. The New England ski resorts are all open despite having higher infection rates. Canada finally has vaccines. They’re likely to hit herd immunity in June. The United States may never get there because of the 40% who have fallen into the Fox News vortex. Americans are unlikely to be allowed into Canada without a vaccine passport. I don’t blame them.
