What’s the magic with SSI? It tops people with small social security checks and minimal other income up to poverty level. Poverty level is a bit more than $1,000/month. The max benefit is less than $800/month.

Yeah, then add in Section 8 where they only have to pay 1/3 of their income to rent. Food stamps (can be hundreds a month with a few kids), heating assistance, Mass Health where they don't pay a penny for health care, free phones. Not a glamorous life, but it seems to work for them...

It basically puts them on the same level as hard working middle class people which is why it angers so many. There's those who are willing to work and those who aren't. Why should those who choose not to work get a similar life style for free to those who break their butts?

Yep. Pull up the Social Security web portal and look at what your SSDI check would be. Mine is more or less the Massachusetts minimum wage and I’m career high income. The average is around $1,400/month. The max if you’re high income is roughly double that. The rhetoric doesn’t align with the real numbers.

Stupid discussion point. Your rhetoric assumes that everyone collecting SSDI is a scammer. You apply that rhetoric to anyone receiving any kind of safety net benefits.

My "rhetoric" "assumes" nothing.

This is about numbers. We were talking about Springfield, and when you incorporate all the freebies it really pays not to work for a good segment of the population there whereas the person in Newton earning $150K/year in the land of $1 million 3/1 capes...not so much. These people all know what they are doing, it's why the labor participation rate in Springfield, Holyoke, Fall River, New Bedford, etc. is so pathetically low.

...and back to Covid.

This weekend I've been a few public places:

gas station for inspection - I was the only one with a mask
Market Basket - 50/50 for mask wearing
florist - 7 of us in the shop, all masked
church - 50/50 for mask wearing
99 - only the staff in masks, I wore mine walking in and out and it was odd as I hadn't eaten inside a restaurant in 15 months.

I went to a hockey tournament this weekend at a huge sports center and no one except my DH's brother and wife and kids were wearing masks. They slunk off in the corner, they place was moderately crowded. They have been extremely cautious this whole time, we haven't seen them since last May when they drove by our house and didn't get out of their car. They are both fully vaxxed so I'm not sure when they'll let up. But they are pretty annoying so I've enjoyed not having to see them

I went to starbuck's yesterday, everyone had a mask so I put one on too.
