One would think...

As warm as it has been (especially the sustained nature of the warmth), and although we seem on tap for another warm and dry spring on the East Coast – several NWS stations actually had warmer highs last March; So far this month, the highest temp at Central Park is 74 F (yesterday), at Bridgeport 65 F (on Monday), and 76 F at Newark (also on Monday). Yet last March (2011) Central Park hit 77 F, Bridgeport hit 76 F, and Newark hit 80 F on the 18th. Although it looks like above normal temps for the rest of the month, it still might be tough for these NWS stations to eclipse the highs they recorded last March.

True, but that was just ONE DAY. It wasn't "consistent" like it is this year.

If anyone misses winter, read this forecast, this Siberian city is the coldest city over 100,000 population on earth (and it's even colder than Barrow, Alaska in the winter........surprisingly, this city actually gets a few 90+ degree days each summer):

Looks like the "back door cold front" that kept Boston a lot cooler (and cloudier) yesterday (and is producing a good deal of snow in Maine) has worked it's way west this morning.

NWS OKX discussion talks about a lot of "uncertainty" between now and Saturday, as to whether it "warms back up" and is sunny, or whether it stays cloudy and cooler (but still above normal, mid-50s predicted today). The only "certainty" in their discussion is that it is supposed to rain tomorrow and that the 60s/70s eventually return, probably from Sunday on.

What is funny about that is that yesterday at 4:00 PM….NWS Boston was cloudy and 43 F and Bangor, ME had light snow and 34 F:

Yet also at 3:00 PM:

Hartford sunny 68 F
Bridgeport sunny 69 F
NYC sunny 70 F
Trenton, NJ sunny 73 F
Wilmington, DE sunny 74 F

I was sitting outside yesterday at 2:00 in the afternoon in the sun and it felt downright hot ( like 80 F)…yet they had jackets on up in Boston and were shoveling snow in Maine! The old time meteorologists used to say that Connecticut is often the rough line between New England weather conditions and Middle Atlantic weather conditions - lol.

As far as next week, while I think temps will be above normal again all week… I think the forecast models are getting a little carried away. They are forecasting such a strong ridge and deep southerly flow that by Wednesday they have highs near 80 F as far north as Trenton, New Jersey. NWS Upton has highs of 75 F for NYC and 70 F for Stamford/New Haven/Hartford…etc. That seems a bit over the top. This is what the ridge will look like by early next week if we believe what the models are saying:

I think we see temps about 10 F above normal – so highs will be in the lower 60’s much of next week, maybe a few mid 60’s in the cities. The last week of the month looks like temps will be 5 to maybe 8 F above normal while the dry pattern looks to continue.

From the NWS OKX website:

"So, why the sudden change in temperatures? We had a backdoor cold front move through overnight. Usually, fronts come in from the west or northwest. A backdoor cold front comes in from the east or northeast. Backdoor cold fronts are typical in the spring after an abnormally warm spring day. Next time we have very warm temperatures in the spring, look for a backdoor cold front in the forecast to bring temperatures back to reality."
