Raleigh smashed a record low this morning and we officially busted 2 hardiness zones this season... many spots tied their all time record low... gville hit -4, only 3 time in over 120 years that they went under 0... this kind of cold is catastrophic for eastern nc... its fine when it gets that cold up north as nothing is affected but down here... i have my work cut out for me... next couple months im spending back and forth between here and down east ....

^Ya, not to mention all of those massive crop failures Jk

Anyways, it's official. At least one of Long Island's stations hit 0 this morning, but the punchline is that it wasn't Westhampton:

National Weather Service : Observed Weather for past 3 Days : Shirley, Brookhaven Airport

Shoveling my driveway after getting home this morning. Having a great time, will never understand why people don't like this

yea, a -12°F isn't going to do any damage; it happens once every few years. If it goes on for a long time, it is rough on some marginal plants. My parent's rhododendron got damaged by a cold winter, though they're in hardiness zone 7a; near where Infamous92 lives. From the coldest day of the winter so far, here's Boston. Charles River frozen over.

Rhododendrens seem to be one of the more cold sensitive plants grown often in the Northeast, as Cambium just commented.

Felt colder with the strong wind even though it didn't drop much. I had to convince my dad last week that snow can remain as powder and won't "freeze". He lives on Long Island…
