This week is officially coldest on record... all time coldest... we have tied one record low, busted a hardiness zone and will soon SMASH the record for time below freezing... previous record is 159 hours in 1982... over 120 hours now with no reprieve... we werent supposed to be this cold but multiple days that were supposed to get over freezing underperformed massively... ofc. Never in 130 years of history has it been this cold for this long after tomorrow... not 1977 , 1985, 1917, 1989, 2015, 2014, 1996, 1978 or any year you can possibly think of. Temperature departures currently 20 degrees below average.
A lot of animals and native vegetation even , is taking a beating. Lots of normally green cooler weather grass has browned, ponds and certain creeks have frozen over... we have thousands of birds migrate here during the winter to our coast and even here i see migratory seagulls.... this is extremely detrimental cold.
Any insects i see in winter will likely not appear also...
The heating bill will likely be the HIGHEST it has ever been...
As for the snow i got ****ed over with a mere inch... a lot of it melted with temps around 30 yesterday... sun burned through a lot of it with many clear areas now... any shaded areas though still fine. This cold was ****ing pointless... no snow really, just all time record cold that was destructive with hardly any benefits except a few less skeeters in summer.
Im done with weather... at least ill get 60s next week. Maybe 70s later on...
End of rant...
I'm not sure what you're talking about. The coldest week on record was February 9-15, 1899, with an average temperature of 15.5°F. The past week was over 10°F warmer, at 26.3°F. I would have loved to get 3+" of snow, but even my inch is sticking pretty well in my forested neighborhood. There's still probably 80-90% snow cover, which is pretty good for just an inch of snow. Also, we're likely to have six straight days below freezing, which wouldn't smash the record but would still tie for 3rd place.

That week in 1899 the Mississippi River froze over at New Orleans. It was the coldest winter down South ever.

The weather service is predicting a high of 33 on the 7th. The average might wind up being 20F for a week long period, which would be the 5th coldest week ever, not coldest ever.

In the South-Central states yes, but not the Southeast.

Lol, we were supposed to go over freezing wedensday and yesterday but neither happened. Do you really think i believe that?
but it's a long cold spell; might make the list of coldest weeks? Records for the airports don't go as far back
We hit -1°F on February 14 (or 16 I forget) 2016, a notoriously warm winter and without snow on the ground. We also hit -1°F in January 1994. We hit 0°F in 2004. So I don't necessarily agree.

Upper level trough remains over the region tonight as strong ridge
builds over the upper Rockies. At the surface, high pressure across
the northern Plains will begin to track southeastward into the Great
Lakes. The combo of this high and lingering upper level low over the
Maritimes will keep a strong pressure gradient over the region. As a
result 925mb winds will increase to near 30-40 kts. Lapse rates per
Bufkit soundings remain steep allowing for these winds to mix to the
surface. So another breezy night with WNW wind gusts around 30 to 45
MPH. The strongest gusts will be across the terrain and near the
coast.
Strong CAA will continue to filter into the region tonight as
secondary shortwave moves through the trough. 850mb temps will fall
to around -25C, 3 STD below normal, by early Saturday morning
resulting in sub-zero temps across much of the region. The
combination of this cold air and strong wind gusts will result in
dangerously cold wind chills. Therefore a wind chill warning has
been issued for western and central MA where wind chills will fall
below -25F.
