Just curious. When was the last time the west - specifically WA, OR and CA - saw an arctic blast as significant as the east experienced in Jan 2014, Feb 2015 or Jan 2018?

It doesn't. It's cold waves back in from the east, so are punched out by the prevailing Westerlies. If pressed I would say January 1989. But I don't know if that got south of Alaska.

We had an arctic outbreak in early Feb that year. In Vancouver, the high on the 2nd was -7C.

That may be what I'm thinking of. The East was warm. It was a La Niña winter; but so is this one.

Not sure about CA in Dec 2008. I don't think there were any subfreezing temps on the coast, nevermind equivalent to the freezes that FL and the gulf coast has received over the past few weeks.

The arctic airmass in Jan 2012 did not penetrate that far south at all. Even Oregon didn't get very cold with that one.

You can't really expect the west to have these arctic blasts. Just compare the averages in BC and WA to Quebec or compare OR to Maine. They are at the same latitude. Vancouver is further north than Quebec City and much milder. Los Angeles and Atlanta are also at the same latitude.

I wish this area would never get another arctic airmass ever again but alas it is a pipe dream Too bad I can't relocate to Honolulu or San Diego...
