Holy hell!! Melt ponds! That implies the ice is thick enough that ice melting on top is iust puddles basivally lol. Thats a common phenomenon across the arctic in summer.
Wow 62 in the *morning* in Philly and 52 in the morning in Boston this morning.
Gotta luv that quick warm up from southerly winds. Can happen anytime to anywhere in North America. It's the reason why the averages are quite warm as they are skewed by these warm-ups.
A good hard warm rain expected in the Northeast too. That'll start the melt up real quick. Love it!
Then the next arctic blast comes but a lot less snow on the ground when it comes...
Oh and other temps: Charlotte at 65 this morning and Charleston at 63. Miami sizzling at 75 this morning with a high of 82.
On the flip side, Minneapolis is -10 and Chicago is 23.
In plenty of other winters, including 2001-2 and 2011-2 Europe had the blue and we had the red. I'm too lazy to look it up.
I remember last winter the Northeast was in the red and Europe was in the blue and these same folks were claiming NYC has the same subtropical climate as New Orleans, lol...
In warm winters NYC does have a subtropical winter. In cold years even New Orleans doesn't have a subtropical winter. That's the unpredictability of the East Coast.
The West was getting pounded by drought busting storms last year and so far they've only gotten one strong storm, although it was nice. Months of no rain and then 6-10" in the places that were burning. NA weather is so variable sometimes...

We're about 55°F with fog. But the last arctic blast started with a few patches of snow about 1/2" deep. in my area, just north of NYC. Serious snow didn't arrive until day 10 or 11 of the 14 day outbreak.

It's in the 60's in VA and rain expected. I suspect most of that will be melted off today.

Has significant melting occurred with the 55F temps?
