It was 88 degrees here yesterday with a breeze. Summer is coming. Where do we go for ice cream in Pahrump?

Seemoore's = located on the corner of Hwy 372 & Blagg. They proclaim to be the "world's tallest ice cream stand". Google it & you will see various pix of Seemoore's thru out the years, but there's nothing else to be found on this place. Looking at the building.....it looks like it's been here a while. I know it changed hands in 2011 & I know if you search the Guiness Book of World Records for "world's tallest ice cream stand" it returns ZERO results. I've been told they have the best ice cream in town, maybe this year I will try it

I Love Yogurt = located smack dab next to Albertson's. This is a fabulous place to cool down during the hot summer months. The interior has 1980s goodies in it - games like Pac Man, or Rubix Cube. Candy like Hubba Bubba. It's all self serve, frozen yogurt. Meaning you pick the size container you want, then YOU fill it up. Feeling daring? Have a little bit of all the flavors! Plain jane vanilla lover? No problem! Fill that cup with as much yogurt as you want, then move over to the toppings bar. Once again, you are in control of how much & what you want to put on your concoction. At the end of the line, you pay by the weight of your delicious treat. The only thing that confuses me? If the inside is supposed to be like totally tubular 80s, then why do they not play music from the 80s? The wait staff is waaaaay to young to remember the 80s & probably has no desire to listen to it.

Dairy Queen = located in the Albertson's shopping center, next to Ooooojah & Verizon.

Tropical Smoothie = located on Hwy 372, across from Subway. The building itself is under construction right now, I am assuming they will be open just in time for the hot summer months! In the past this building has been many things. A mexican restaurant, a used car lot, another fast food place that I don't know the name of. Here's hoping this time the new occupants can make it work & stick around for a while

Cre8lite, you are a top notch booster for Pahrump. I find you entertaining and knowledgable. I have always considered Pahrump a reasonable area to live in, close to Death Valley, if one has dirt bikes or jeeps, life could be good there. Although, I am partial to the empty lands of north Nye County. Personally, I feel Pahrump has gotten too big.

ty sierravillian! i'm glad you're enjoying the nye county road trip thru my eyes. this town, like any others, has it's good & bad points. for me, anything north of pahrump is too isolated. it was a compromise for me to locate here. growing up in a larger town (250k), pahrump was quite a culture shock to my system. the longer i live here, the more attached i become to it.

i once visited virginia & was in awe over the year yound xmas store that i went thru. i could imagine my xmas shopping getting a whole lot easier thru out the year, instead of waiting until a specific "season" arrived. i imagine they have the same kind of feast or famine that pahrump has, except pahrump doesn't have a year round xmas store. we have year round fireworks stores.

twice a year these stores suddenly have multiple cargo containers in their parking lots - full of explosive goodness!! this phenomenon is specifically a pahrump thing, not a nye county thing. beatty has no fireworks stores, neither does tonopah. only pahrump. o there is one lonely store on hwy 95 just south of beatty, next door to dennis hof's alien themed brothel. i'm not sure if this is simply because those towns don't want this type of store, or if there's a statute somewhere that i'm unaware of ??? anything is possible.

pahrump has a limit on the # of stores we can have & i think we're maxed out with 4 here in town. the permit process can be pretty involved if you wanted to open your own fireworks store in nye county. all of them are on hwy 160, except one named "area 51" which is located on hwy 372.

if you've never been to our fireworks stores, let me paint a picture for you. imagine a toys r us store. remove all the toys. on those empty shelves, insert a billion different brightly colored packages just full of fun & excitement. you can find all kinds of prices on the products. anywhere from $15 all the way up to $250+. that's a lot of $$$ to waste on something that'll last you less than 5 minutes. but to each their own.

i could not do an equal comparison, zombie killers at store #1 cost X while at store #2 it cost Y. each store had their own names to sell. some were plain jane, like the "metal dino" while others were eye catching like the "shotgun wedding". heck, one of the locations had packing that reminded me of an adult store more than a fireworks store - it was named something like "brunette ******" with a picture of a scantily clad busty female straddling a rocket. sex sells

at each store i stopped at, there were no less than 5 cars in the parking lot. each of those 5 cars? every single one of them had a california license plate. it's only may. in the many weeks leading up to july 4th, those parking lots will get fuller. the working hours of the stores will get longer. the amount of $ these places make must be staggering.

once you have found the perfect box of explosives to take home with you, you will sign a form. there is no way around signing this form. it flat out states you will remove these fireworks from nye county within 24 hrs. you are legal to transport them within nye county, after that....you're on your own. that also means, residents of nye county cannot set off fireworks in their yards. we can sell the locals fireworks, but we have no designated safe place to set them off. your driveway isn't the correct answer. neither is your back yard full of sagebrush.

because we have these year round stores, we will never have those temporary pop up boxes that appear in the grocery store parking lots - boy scout troop # whatever selling fireworks. it's always a shocker to drive to another town close to july 4th & see these pop up boxes.

and just so we're all clear on the law, here's the legal-eeze explanation of possessing fireworks in nevada:

One of my favorite Nevada things. Where else can you sell that which is illegal to possess.

And you can sit out there on the fourth and watch and listen to misdemeanor committed by the thousands...mostly care of our good friends in Pahrump...

And where is the safest place to shoot off your fireworks legal or illegal...the street where it is specifically illegal.

Cre8lite, a Pahrump story. My wife's grandmother was a Hollywood Starlet, Cecil DeMille owned a horse ranch in Pahrump back in the 1920's or before.. They used to ride out there in his big ole car and have quite the parties in Olden Day Pahrump.

i took a ride up to tonopah the other day. snapped a few shots on the way back. all of these pix are on hwy 95 inbetween tonopah & beatty.

gives you a good idea of how desolate these places are out here. when we tell you there's nothing out here, we mean it! beatty is the last stop to get gas, food, stop for a bathroom break, etc. until tonopah - that's 93 miles of wide open spaces.

the last one is a little difficult to see, as the sun was reflecting off the windshield pretty good but if you look in the green area in the middle of the picture you can see 3 burros grazing. this was just north of beatty. the best time to see wild burros is dusk & dawn.

i really think beatty should open "burro viewing areas" - a designated spot(s) along side the road where the public can pull into safely to view them as the graze their way thru the countryside. there is a spot in northern california, prairie creek in humboldt county, where they do this for the wild elk that live in the park. i stopped by prairie creek a billion times in my childhood & never got tired of it. beatty could easily do the same thing with their wild burros.

One man's desolation is another man's paradise. I could live happily in Goldfield.

looking for something to do this holiday weekend? if you're willing to drive a little & step back in time, try jim butler days in tonopah

i attended this for the 1st time last year. let me tell you, advertising for this event is seriously LACKING. there's 1 road thru tonopah & it's hwy 95. EVERYONE has to drive thru town. you'd think they would have big ol' signs out advertising "Jim Butler Days this way", but nooooooooo. i knew the competition events would be held at the tonopah mining park - which is located directly behind the mizpah. if i didn't know that ahead of time, i never woulda found it.

schedule of events:

http://www.tonopahnevada.com/Documen..._Days_2013.pdf

it was FREAKIN' COLD when i was there last year, i've heard it's snowed in the past at this event. the weather forecast this year appears to be better. the wind always blows in tonopah, it's just a way of life, so be sure to bring a jacket.

last year i watched the single jack & the double jack competition. those are some strong & daring people! the object is to get the deepest hole in the boulder. single jack is 1 individual with a sledgehammer in one hand & a spike in the other. double jack is 2 people. one holds the spike, the other swings the sledgehammer (you have got to trust the one swinging that hammer near your head!!!). basically you hit the spike, turn the spike, hit the spike, turn the spike, repeat until the judge calls time.

altho this article is from the federal highway administration, it gives you a better idea of single jack vs double jack:

Your thread has been very informative! I was wondering if you could tell me the different stores around there.. mostly interested in the chains. So I've gathered Home Depot, Walmart, Albertsons, and Walgreens. Anywhere else to shop/grocery shop?

Also, what does the rental situation look like? Do rentals pop up in the subdivisions often?
