a company that recently opened it's doors here in town is integrity taxi (751-1111). we've had a few taxi companies try to stay open over the years but this one seems to be legit - no hidden agendas, no running out of money suddenly, no disparaging remarks in the newspapers from ex-employees. everything appears to be on the up & up with this one.

while many people have asked "why does pahrump NEED a taxi service? it's not THAT big of a town" true, but think of the seniors we have out here. after all, the community does have lots of them. some of them can't/won't drive. how are they supposed to get to their doctor appointments? to the grocery store? what about the other slice of the population that isn't a senior, but also doesn't have a car?

integrity taxi is owned by carol & jim jimmerson. jim was borned & raised in vegas & went on to become a high profile attorney. he had visited pahrump as a kid/teen to hunt rabbits & always liked the rural beauty of it out here. in 2013 carol & jim decided to file the paperwork to start their own taxi service here in town. they provide a few services to our population:

1) shuttle service for medical patients from pahrump to vegas
2) taxi service in town
3) a 15 passenger shuttle service from pahrump to vegas with stops at the silverton casino; mccarran airport & the fashion show mall

the shuttle service to vegas operates monday - saturday. the taxi service is 24/7. they even give a discount to seniors. they have hired 10 people here in town to drive taxi/shuttle for them. here's hoping in the future they can provide more jobs out here!

I gave it some thought...
Didn't take me long to come to a similar conclusion.

Besides, I'm a tech geek....

i will break up our offroading trip into smaller sections, otherwise we could be here all day/night chatting & ooogling at the pix. our offroading trip this weekend was to the backside of the mt charleston mtn range. in reality, this is really clark county & not nye BUT it's next to impossible to reach these trails from vegas without having billy goat blood running thru your veins. majority of the people on these trails are pahrumpians, as the trails are on our side of the mtn.

in addition to all the safety precautions you need to do when exploring the outdoors (take plenty of water, food, warm clothes, let others know where you are going, etc etc....) you also have to be aware of your surroundings because during our monsoon season, we will occasionally get flooded streets. all of that water comes directly off of this mtn range, at an extremely fast pace. majority of the trails up here are dry creek beds, which can & will be full of water some times. you do NOT want to be in the way of fast moving water up here.

our 1st stop = charcoal kilns

DSC02919 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
there once was a information board telling you about the structures. it is no longer there, but the internet is FULL of information about these & other kilns in the area. someone was nice enough to make note of what was on the information board:

"These beehive-shaped structures are the remains of three charcoal making kilns and one Lime Kiln built for Jonas Osborne in 1877. He had designed and built a big furnace to smelt over 20 tons of silver and lead ore each day in the boomtown of Tecopa, California in January of 1878. Forty-four men attempted to keep the furnace working by cutting and hauling the ore, and feeding and constantly repairing the furnace. It completely failed and was abandoned in the fall of 1878.

As this area of the Spring Mountains had the best and closest source of wood, the kilns were setup here and the charcoal produced was carried by horse drawn wagons about 50 miles to the Tecopa Smelter. Evidence shows only tree limbs were cut in fuel and no extensive tree cutting was done.

Natural erosion, vandalism, and theft of the limestone blocks has ruined much of this site. The main kiln was partially restored in 1971 and 1995. The fence is a safety measure for both the kilns and for visitors.

The main kiln will be rehabilitated in the fall of 2004 by contractors funded by southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act funds. The walls of the other two kilns will be stabilized. You are welcome to view the kilns and their rehabilitation outside of the fence area. If you have any questions or need to report any vandalism, call 702-515-5400."

there is a 10 ft tall cyclone fence all the way around the kiln site, but some people have bent the fence so that they can get up close & personal with the strutures. did this contribute to the destruction of the kilns? quite possible.

the only pix i can find on the internet of the complete, intact structure:

next stop = wheeler well & catch basin

a little further up the road from the charcoal kilns, you will come to a large wide spot with dry camp sites on the left & a large tub in the middle of the "road". this tub is wheeler well. it was quite full when we were there this weekend:

DSC02928 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

during the summer, this 500 gallon container can be bone dry. the wildlife up here have come to depend on this for drinking water & one of our local residents (dick senior) has been the unofficial care taker of the well for many many years. he is getting older & recently sat down with the pvtimes for a q&a session:

‘Keeper’ Dick Senior talks about horses, water and misconceptions | PV Times

there is a group of citizens who have volunteered to help dick continue on with the "keeper of the well" mission

https://www.facebook.com/TheKeeperOfWheelerWell

and they have been grant funded to educate the local school kids about the well & how important it is that we as a society maintain the well for all the wild creatures to use:

see the black tube coming out of the tank & running along the ground?

it's collecting the water from a catch basin, similar to this one:

this catch basin one is miles & miles up the road & i know this is not the ONLY catch basin or the ONLY well the animals drink from. these just happen to be the ones that are out in the open & easily accessible

btw, there was still patches of snow on the ground. in some parts it had melted just enough for a little mudbogging

last stop = wheeler pass

DSC02935 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

back down the road, close to wheeler well, there is a fork in the road. one way takes you to the well, the other way takes you to the pass. i had been to the well, catch basin & kilns multiple times but never been to the pass. let me tell you, it was my 1st & last trip to the pass. we didn't have to share the road with anyone, the mtn views were stunning:

DSC02934 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
DSC02941 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

but the rocky terrain was enough to make my insides are jumbled & squishy. i don't mind some slow-down-to-a-crawl-to-inch-over-the-rocky-part-of-the-road sections, but geeeeeeeeez! this road was 95% that & 5% enjoyable.

this was our last trip of the day & up until now the weather had been great. some spots you could wander around in your tshirt, other sections it was a little chillier so a light jacket was needed. the pass itself? holy she-moleys! not only did i need my heavy jacket, but it was a challenge to just stand in place without getting knocked over by the wind!! i was out of the jeep long enough to get a picture of the surrounding areas & my hands were numb.

vegas side
DSC02938 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

we did not go down the vegas side of the mtn. we've heard that side is MUCH rockier than the pahrump side. after doing some research i discovered the vegas side takes you down to the town of cold creek & a while back (2011) there was a land dispute going on. i guess the trail has been here forever & ever, a lady bought a piece of property on the vegas side & discovered the trail goes right thru her land. she tried to get the trail closed & eventually came to an agreement - she'd leave the trail open but post signs so that people knew they were on private property & to stay on the trail, keep the dust to a minimum, etc.

as we made our way out of the canyons, we passed some great rock formations:

the last 5 minutes of the ride, realizing we had seen ZERO critters the whole day we finally got to see some wildlife!!

DSC02946 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
DSC02947 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

there were 5 or 6 of them, grazing their way along the trail. everyone had their thick winter coats on, not a horn on any of them, not even spikes or small nubs. but still wonderful to see
