um, you need to check your facts. the detention here in town starts at $26 or $27 an hour. i know because i have a handful of co-workers that went to work for the detention center. i don't know what they pay in other parts of the nation, but here in town it's GOOD money.

Glad you are OK. Would you call these temps normal? Or would you call this an unusual heat wave.

I was in Northern CA for the weekend. The temps (highs) were from 105 - 118 and the humidity was around 30 - 40%. I felt like I was in hell, it was so oppressive. At least in Arizona and Nevada when it is hot the humidity is usually 5 - 10%.

these are VERY unusual temps for us. normally during this time of year we are around 100 degrees, maybe 105. during august we'll get ~110, with maybe 3 or 4 days of 113ish.

to experience our type of heat, turn your oven to 450 degrees. leave it alone for ~30 minutes. open the door. feel the rush of hot air gushing out? that's what it's felt like this last week or so. there's no humidity with it, it's just hot air.

i've been in northern california during their heat waves, with the 40% humidity - no thank you. i'll take my 113 degrees with little to no humidity ANY DAY

Good to know those temps are unusual, and I agree with you. 113 with low humidity beats 113 with 40% humidity ANY DAY!

Hope your temps get back to normal and when will I go back to Chico, CA in July, that would be NEVER! The highs were 118, 111, 108, 105, 105, and the wedding was an "outdoor" wedding that I attended. CRAZY!!!

i saw a new sign this week - "coming soon!" i just love seeing these type of signs pop up around town what's coming soon, you ask? our very own pizza hut!!

this building is located on the corner of hwy 372 & pahrump valley blvd. when i moved to town this building was a cute little gift shop stuffed full of everything i didn't need but it was cool to wander thru. when that closed it was a handful of restaurants - a burger joint (they had a hard time serving their food in a timely manner); a 50's style cafe (not sure why it closed) & i'm sure i've forgotten about the other businesses that have had their turn in this building.

do we NEED a pizza hut? yes & no. we don't have one now BUT we have ooooodles of pizza places in town.

* papa john's
* papa murphy's
* little ceasar's
* not to mention the mom & pop places around town

AND, i'm not sure if the developer has fully done their research. this building isn't very big, the parking lot isn't very big. majority of companies that come to town underestimate the population here & occupy a spot that is way too small to accomodate the foot traffic. my friends & i don't even bother frequenting a new business during the first month, as the ENTIRE town will be there. the lines will be long, the wait will be longer than my lunch hour, it is really worth the hassle???

but the biggest problem with this particular site? just a few weeks ago the county commissioners agreed to install 2 roundabouts in town (we have none right now). one of these roundabouts is going in at this intersection.....and they've already discussed using part of the parking lot of this parcel (possibly the whole lot) for the new roundabout. pizza hut may need to find a new home before they get moved in

i hadda take a trip to beatty today. stopped by eddie's world, which is home to oooooodles of candy; an ice cream bar during the summer; subway & a FABU beef jerky place. i can't find a rhyme or reason for the layout of the candy isles, but they have an amazing selection. be warned - the prices are not exactly cheap. all of the packages seem to be about the same size, which are pretty generous.

i bought a package of english toffee ($8) & wandered up to the counter to pay for my goodies. there on the counter was something i truly did not expect to see in a candy store. what did i see?

urine sample cups full of yellow something or other & the label on top of the container said "clean pee pee $2.99" um, eeewww when i asked the clerk about them she told me it was a gummy type substance, with a sour taste. i asked if they were selling & to my surprise her answer was YES

omg, who in their right mind would WANT to purchase this? if i didn't stop to take pix, my co-workers would've never believed me!

next up....the best western!

90 rooms, 2 pools, 2 hot tubs. they are pet friendly & offer free wifi. going rate is ~$85/night. this is where i stayed when i first came to town to explore the area. friendly staff, descent rooms. it's no taj mahal, but it's not one of those filthy places where you're affraid to touch anything either. i recommend this place to anyone that comes to town. it doesn't have the pretty courtyard area that saddle west does, but the rooms at saddle west (from what i hear) need a serious make over.

attached to the building is/was "wulfy's sports bar". they had an actual bar area (no one under 21 allowed) as well as a family friendly area, a small kiddie bowling area & a handful of arcade games. the food was pretty dang good. i believe the potato chips were home made (mmmmmm!).

the big empty building (with the yellow truck in the picture) was originally supposed to be a casino. i've been here over 8 yrs & i've never seen an ounce of work being done to the building. when i stayed at here while house hunting, i was told that it was the owner's "pet project". i heard later that the owner was given X amount of time to complete it in & when he didn't, the commissioners refused to renew his permits for it. so there it stands. big ol' empty building...

in yesterday's newspaper we learned the entire block was purchased by a group from california & the sports bar is being renamed to "draft picks". all of the staff will retain their jobs (hooray!) & they are trying to figure out what to do with the big ol' empty building. maybe a casino? maybe a movie theater? they are keeping their options open.

let's hope they bring nothing but good things to town

behind the best western, but still part of the property is the best western rv resort. it is also part of the package the group from california purchased.

there are ~120 spaces, each of them offer full hookups. no tents allowed. they have showers, laundry facilities, a couple of pools, free wifi & some places are pretty shaeded. others offer only palm trees as shade. all of the spaces look pretty roomy. some are pull thru, some aren't. going rate is ~$35/night. i'm not sure how long the maximum stay is, as finding a webpage with information on this park is a bit challenging. one website told me max stay is 70 nights but driving thru the park...there were some motorhomes that looked like they had been there a LOT longer then 70 days.

the hotel itself is on the main road thru town, the rv park is located behind the hotel & the only buildings near the rv park is the post office, so the nights are pretty stinking quiet
