The single most influential paranormal broadcaster in history. Art literally created the media space that is now Coast to Coast AM and his legacy carries on through the Dark Matter Digital Network and his return show titled Midnight In the Desert, now hosted and hopefully carried forward by his former producer Heather Wade.

Midnight in the Desert - Live Late Night Talk Radio

He will be missed greatly but streaming channels are available which broadcast his classic shows 24/7.

at a recent bocc meeting involving dennis hof, one of the commissioners asked staff to put an item on the upcoming election ballot asking the citizens of nye county if they wanted to have brothels. the commissioner was clearly upset with dealing with hof & this is how she decided to show her anger.

well....someone decided to take that a step further. now there is a group of people (locals? i'm not 100% sure) who have decided they want a petition to prohibit brothels in both nye & lyon counties. did the commissioner work with these groups to start this petition? or did the groups hear what the commissioner said & came up with this idea on their own?

one man is quoted as saying "it's been an eyesore". um, what? you don't just stumble upon a brothel. of the 4 that are left in nye county, 3 of them you can't see from the main road. the 4th you can, but unless you're paying attention, you wouldn't know that building is a brothel.

someone else states that nye county can't attract other companies like tesla or apple or google because we have brothels. i'm sorry, we were NEVER in the running for that kinda business. in the article from the reno gazette, one of the commissioners from storey county (where tesla AND the famous mustang ranch are located) said having a brothel in town was never even an issue for tesla.

i understand the base wants to protect girls from sex trafficking. i get it, i truly do, but dang it....do your homework before you start bashing these private industries. the brothels bring in a lot of tax money for the counties (heck, our working girls give part of their earnings to the veterans affairs dept), they provide jobs not just to the girls but to everyone in the county (limo drivers, mechanics to fix the limos, people who fingerprint the girls, the local power company, the local grocery stores). these girls are safe, clean, drug free & are doing this because they want to. they are not forced into this business.

our counties will suffer an economic loss if the brothels are shut down. in one of the articles it says we'll just have to get new business to come to town - don't you think we're already trying to do that??? one of the complaints we had heard in the past was company X wasn't coming to town because the planning dept wanted too much in fees. not "omg, you have brothels"

whilst chitty chatting with our neighbor yesterday, he brought up the fact that he is helping to get signatures for the above petition (he is a pastor). i politely disagreed with him.

he explained that where he grew up, illegal/forced prostitution was common & he saw how it destroyed women & their families. i agree. illegal/forced prostitution is never a good thing. but the women that work in our brothels go into this of their own free will. he countered with many of them have pimps. maybe they do, maybe they don't. we have no way to prove that, but based on how many hoops they have to jump thru to get their license (let alone how much they have to pay in fees to keep their license), i highly doubt a pimp is going to allow that kinda $$$ slip thru his fingers. the girls are clean, drug free, safe & make good money. not to mention how much money the brothels pay to the county. he said it wasn't that much money that came back to the county. and of course, he threw in the fact that in the good book it is frowned upon <my eyes starting rolling here>

luckily we have a great relationship where we both belive everyone is entitled to their opinion & their own belief system. he went home happy to have shared his lifestory with me; i was happy to hear his side of why he was doing this. he thinks i'm nuts & i think he's nuts, but it's ok. healthy debate is good for the soul

i still say do your homework, thoroughly, before embarking on a quest to destroy legitimate businesses. when you do it solely because it conflicts with your belief system, you can trample on the rights of others.

i drove thru tonopah a few weeks back & was pleasantly surprised to see the belvada hotel is under construction/renovation. i had heard it was coming but that was a long time ago & never saw anything change

the belvada has never been open in my 13 yrs of living here. i'm hoping they plan to restore it similar to how the mizpah was done - preserve history but make is safe/functional for todays standards.

in front of the hotel they have some amazing square purple blocks that i'm hoping they keep. i'm not entirely sure who purchased the belvada or when the construction will be completed.

Default Retire in Pahrump?

I saw somewhere online (can't remember where) that Pahrump is a good retiree destination, like Mesquite and Prescott. My husband and I (who are both retired) are considering a move to Prescott sometime this year, but we were wondering about Pahrump as a place to live out our remaining years.

Can anyone provide some information on Pahrump, i.e. being a safe place to live, having necessary amenities (such as doctors, hospital, etc.); supermarkets, department stores, restaurants. We're guessing that it gets as hot as Las Vegas in the summer? Prescott looked appealing to us because it's cooler in the summer, but we're trying to get away from the really cold weather here in PA and Prescott gets pretty cold in the winter. Also, the homes in Pahrump are much more inexpensive than they are in Prescott, and the prices continue to increase there. We've been looking at homes online and noticed that a lot of them have well water. Would that be a problem in the future? We hear about the fear of water shortages in AZ, but we weren't sure about the water situation in NV. Also, it seems like there aren't any with natural gas. Most of them are all-electric homes. Because of this, are electric bills on the high side?

Our children are in Southern California, and Pahrump would be a lot closer to them than Prescott, and we're trying to get as close to them as possible without moving to California (which we don't want to do). It's a 4-hour drive from Pahrump, whereas it's a 6-hour drive from Prescott, and we would rather not have to fly to see them every time if we don't have to.

If anyone would like to provide us any information at all about Pahrump, that would be much appreciated.

hi rosanne! pahrump & prescott have roughly the same population, but that's where the similarities end.

prescott gets more rain & snow. pahrump is hotter (avg summer high is 108; avg winter high is 55). we are about 5-10 degrees cooler than vegas. we receive ~4 inches of rain per year.

we have 1 hospital in town, with a good smattering of doctors. vegas is only an hour away so if you don't like the dr's here in town, you can always drive to vegas.

there are no department stores in pahrump (like jcpenneys or kohls). for those kinda stores, you gotta go into vegas.

we have 3 grocery stores: walmart, smiths & albertsons

we have 1 chain sit down restaurant (dennys), the rest are mom & pop places. we have a plethora of fast food places tho.

no natrual gas in pahrump, everything is electric unless you choose propane. electric bills are subjective, only because age of the house; size of the house; is the house empty during the day; how cool do you want it. i have an 1800 sq ft single story house, built in 2005. we generally have 1 outrageous bill during the summer ($250) & 1 equally outragous bill during the winter. the lowest my bill has been is $95.

water is another story. right now if you were to purchase an existing house, that already had a well, you would be sitting pretty. if you were to purchase a blank piece of property & want to build on that property, it can be pretty dang pricey. there's no easy economical way to figure out how much water exists in the aquifer beneath us. due to over promising how much water rights property owners had in the past, new well drillers are paying the price for it.

cre8lite, thank you for the quick response.

So if we purchase a new house that is already built and up for sale, can we expect the well to already be drilled and ready to use, and will that be included in the purchase price?

cre8lite, your flicker photo stream on Pahrump is outstanding, truly.

I think that for prospective residents this is a fantastic visual resource to get a window to the real Pahrump.

I hope you'll not mind my sharing the url for your gallery:

And the other galleries you have up are equally stunning, esp. Amargosa!
