That's funny. We shouldn't care what people think. But most of us do. At least in some matters. I'll live where I choose, won't worry that others think badly about my choice.

On the other hand, I sure feel good in a nice car!

it's been a while, let's get a few updates:

1) it's been H O T. hotter than usual, like 5 to 10 degrees above normal this summer. every so often there is a moment of "aaaahhhhh THIS is what it's supposed to feel like" only to turn back around & get warmer the next day it's officially monsoon season, so in addition to the hot temperatures we also have humidity. it hasn't rained during the day (yet), but there was one night of a good 30+ of down pour. we've got one more month to go for monsoon season & the temps will start cooling down in september. nice thing about monsoon season? the cloud formations are stinking amazing:

2) the medical building on hwy 160 is coming along. the building, from the outside, appears to be done. i am sure they are putting the finishing touches on the inside. the parking lot is in & there are stripes on the pavement. decorative rock is in the proper lcoations. i did notice there wasn't a stitch of shade ANYWHERE in the parking lot - there are some trees planted along the roadway, but no trees/plants planted on the grounds. this building isn't housing NEW medical facilities.
they are consolidating all of the existing medical offices, which are spread out around town, int the new building. so once they get final approval to move into the building, then each of those existing offices will have to move their practice into this building. i'm hopeful they built for growth. i'd guess by fall there'd be some open practices here.

3) jack in the box. progress is happening, but not a lightening speeds. they have the building stucco'd, but that's it. still gotta do the parking lot, lighting, windows, etc.

4) tractor supply company. WOW. they are moving right along....

5) i do my best to give you facts about what's happening here in nye county. but sometimes, getting the truth can be cumbersome. so this last item is purely rumor. we've got a pretty healthy rumor mill here in town & most of the times, those "truths" are waaaay off base. the one rumor i've heard for YEARS now & is completely untrue is that we are getting an in & out burger down at the speed mountain raceway. at this moment in time, this is FALSE. i have spoken to multiple people in planning & public works (people that see the applications for building permits) & not a single one of them have seen anything about in & out burger. doesn't mean it won't happen in the future, but right now....it ain't happening.

with that out of the way, i've heard this story from multiple sources, so take it with a grain of salt. last summer, almost to the day, dickey's bbq opened in the spot next door to denny's on hwy 160. i ate there once. it was ok, nothing fantabulous. about a month ago, the signage changed. with no warning. the story goes like this: two brothers opened the store. one brother (doug) was listed on the franchise, the other brother (eric) was not. things were fine for the 1st year. then something happened & the details get sketchy. doug got sick & went into the hospital. eric stepped in to take care of the business. i'm not sure if the falling out happened before doug went into the hospital or after, but story is that doug's wife was upset that eric was running the business so she went to the store & ripped down everything that had the "dickey's" name on it. eric wanted to keep the business afloat & since his name isn't on the franchise paperwork, he can't do business as an official "dickey's" location. so eric has renamed/rebranded the business. at some point i need to go in & try out their food. maybe i will like it better, maybe it'll be worse.

Thanks for your update. As for Dickey's, airing family feud to your customer base is often the first clear indication of a failing business.

years back i purchased some plants from the annual master gardners sale - 2 silk trees & 2 chaste trees. i planted 1 silk & 1 chaste on the east side of the house; the others on the west side of the house. the ones on the east side of the house have grown quite large - they are both over 7 ft tall & look quite healthy. these are in technically in the front yard, but east side of the house.

the ones planted on the west side are in the side yard, so they don't get as much sunlight as the east siders. they are oh, 6ft tall? they are growing, but slowly.

this summer has been hotter than normal, for longer periods of time. the silk tree on the west side of the house has looked a little....wilty? i thought maybe the heat was getting to it, so i added one of those watering tubes that waters the roots. about a week passed & it still looked sickly. everything else in the yard looked ok, a little tired of the heat but not sickly. so this wekend i went out for a closer look.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

well heck! the problem wasn't it needed water, something has been munching on my tree!!!
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

of course, this was on the opposite side of where i installed the watering tube, so no wonder i didn't see it

i broke out my saw & started removing the munched on limbs. there were 3 total that had to go. just by luck, i found something in one of my cuts:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

i got a close up look at him - he was flat. the little black things are teeth/pinchers
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

i've never seen anything like him, so after i took all of these pictures, i promptly squashed him dead & then drove down to my local star nursery to see what the heck it was. i was told it's a "borer" & was given some stuff to use to protect my tree from future attacks. i asked if this thing was partial to silk trees? or did it like ALL trees? yep, it likes all trees. nutz!

i'm guessing i cut the thing in half, as the closest thing i could find on the internet was this larva:
“Old House Borers” Infest New Houses - Colonial Pest Control

in 10 yrs, this is the first time some kinda bug has attacked my trees. i'm now hyper sensitive to what is happening with my trees.

Thank you cre8lite...that is a memorable picture.

I spent most of the eclipse in a dental chair. Kind of interesting. Half the staff was dying to see the eclipse. Glasses at the ready. Unfortunately the layer was solid. So no direct eclipse. However when I left there was a nice picture of the sun eclipsed showing through the clouds. Thought about going back in and suggesting a look but thought it might cause problems.

in the last 10 yrs, the local power company (valley electric) has built a massive infrastructure. this last year they decided to sell their 230kv transmission system. since it is a coop, they needed 2/3 approval from the members to go forward with the sale. if you pay a power bill, you're a voting member. voting closed in early november 2016 & the membership approved the sale. however, it wasn't as straightforward as we all hoped it would be. i'm not sure if it was simply because trump won the election, of if it was perfect timing, but.....the wheels fell off the wagon. after the membership ok'd the sale, then the federal energy regulatory commission (ferc) had to approve the sale as well. 2 or 3 members stepped down/retired from the board. trump had to nominate people to the board & the senate had to confirm them. without a quorom, the ferc couldn't meet or vote on anything. we were stuck in limbo until they had a quorom, until very recently. the sale has FINALLY been approved!!!

you can see the slow progress:

once the sale has completed all of it's hurdles, the members will receive a one time refund of $579, plus a 9.9% rate reduction.

ok, kids! last weekend was a holiday weekend & what does that mean? ROAD TRIP!!! everyone get their maps out & find tonopah, nv. i traveled A LOT of miles this last weekend & took LOTS of pictures

from tonopah follow hwy 95 north. you'll see mina (population ~150) & a little further up the road you'll see luning (population ~90). there is absolutely nothing inbetween these 3 towns - no gas stations, no general stores, no bathrooms, nothing. speed limit is 25mph thru tonopah, mina & luning. if anyone is looking for an entrepreneurship, open yourself a gas station in luning. it is 80 miles from tonopah, traffic is forced to drive thru town & there will be no competition.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mina,_Nevada
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luning,_Nevada

just a tidbit of info - as soon as we left tonopah we were no longer in nye county. we will eventually get back into nye county, but we have to pass thru neighboring counties to get to our final destination.

once we pass luning, we're going to turn right onto state route 361. there is a large solar farm on the left hand side of the road. as many times as i have kept going straight on 95, i have never noticed the solar farm until i got onto 361. either i'm blind or just never paid attention

anyhoo, there is a small mtn range 361 passes thru & the rock formations are pretty darn cool

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

further up the road you'll find gabbs (population ~270). we'll cover gabbs in another post, as i've got plenty to share about it. for right now know that shortly before we came upon gabbs, we're back in nye county. from here on out everything is nye county.

just past gabbs, we'll turn right onto state route 844. here's where the scenery starts to change. there's another mtn pass to go thru, which is part of the toiyabe range

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toiyabe_Range

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

you can see in that last photo, there was a wildfire that went thru here in the past. lots of trees, lots of green & then you drop down out of the mtn pass & this is what you see:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

miles upon miles upon miles. nothing but you & the sagebrush. for right now, you're still on a paved road. o, one more thing to mention - this here is open range territory. meaning those moo cows that are normally behind fences? yeah, they've got the right of way out here. no fences to keep them in. all of these animals in the photos are less than 5 ft from the main road. in fact, we had to stop to let the pretty light tan one & all of her friends cross the road.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

ok, back to the map. you'll see that state route 844 makes a left turn & continues kinda north east. this is where we get off the paved road & get dirty!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

straight ahead is the berlin-ichthyosaur (pronounced ick-thee-o-sore) state park! WOOO HOOOOO! i finally get to see icky i've been wanting to see icky for years!

a little hard to read, but if you are a NV resident, you get a discount on fees
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

the campground only has 14 sights. we arrived thursday afternoon & we were camper #4. all spots are spread out, you know you have neighbors but they aren't like 5 ft away from you. each one had a nice covered picnic table, a bbq grill & a firepit.

so here we are, in the berlin-icky state park. berlin is pretty cool little ghost town

at one point in time, there were ~65 buildings on this hillside. they have done what they could to preserve what was still standing. they have little sign posts at each spot, telling you what the building was used for. majority, if not all, are from the memory of a berlin resident, who has since passed. the town never had more than 250 people in it (including 1 very popular prostitute). lots of pinion pines & juniper bushes

they have these marked trails...i've never seen markers so elaborate before!

we wandered down to see the cemetery - lemme tell ya, these people musta had GREAT leg muscles. geezus! going down to the cemetery wasn't bad, coming up? doesn't look bad on the pictures but cre8lite ain't no mtn goat!! she's a flat lander for sure

there's only 4 marked graves (including 1 hispanic man)

the hispanic man had these things hanging on the outside of the fence. 6 total, we don't have a clue what they are. we asked the forest rangers & they also aren't sure. possibly a device to lower the casket into the ground? maybe something to set the casket on? but why leave them there, of all places?
