i'm a little late in getting this out here, but life has been kinda hectic lately. let's take a look at the jeep run that was held last weekend

there was a nice article in the pvtimes about the jeep run:
https://pvtimes.com/sports/participa...etting-better/

i am not a morning person & i like to camp, so we always go up the night before the jeep run to camp. we got camp set up, we had dinner, just as we were setting up a buddies tent (always fun to do by flashlight) we caught a glimpse of something moving in the moonlight. we shifted our flash lights to the movement & saw??? DONKEYS! a baby, an adult & possibly a teenager? they wandered thru the campground & went about their merry way

the next morning was jeep run this sign always signals the registration/starting point:

each year we are handed a map & regulations. usually the map is a 11x17 piece of paper that is mangled by the time the day is over & trying to shrink it down to share with others is a pain. this year it was a normal 8x11 piece of paper & i was able to save it from destruction. this was the 1st year we did not receive a historical tour book, which would normally tell you what kind of rock a particular mountain was made of, or what kind of material was mined here in the past, or what the early settlers used this cave for.

once you were registered, away you go! there were signs along the path to indicate right way, wrong way. these markers have gotten better over the years i'd say this year they were perfect:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

the rock formations you see along the way can be breathtaking:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

sometimes you're all alone on the trail, other times you are surrounded by dozens of "friends":

this next sight was a first for me. driving along, minding our own business when i spot something moving on the trail. not next to the trail, ON the trail. as it registers in my brain what it is, i think o crap, hubby just ran him over. STOP THE JEEP! STOP THE JEEP! he thinks i'm nuts, but he stops & then i have to stop the jeep behind us before they run ME over. i look around crazily to see if the poor creature was dead. nope, still moving along. EXCELLENT! now i've got the jeep behind me wondering what in the world i found & i'm telling them to stay in their jeep, as they are deathly afraid of spiders.

here it is, my first sighting of a trantula in the wild:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

(s)he was a little larger than a coke can (including legs). more like the size of a hostess cupcake. we let it wander safely across the trail before we continued on.

if you want to learn something interesting about trantulas, enlarge this one:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

i showed this to my spider knowledgable co-worker who tells me when you look at the front 2 legs (on the left of the spider body), you can see hooks on the underside of the legs. those hooks tell you this is a male spider, females don't have those hooks. ok great to know. i won't be touching them anytime soon, but good to know.

when you enlarge this one, you can see his little footie prints in the poof dirt:

there was one spot along the trail that was new this year & lemme tell ya.....i'm not a fan. i love jeeping. i grew up in a jeep. but i don't do well with sheer drop off cliffs. especially when they are on MY side of the jeep. it wasn't a very wide trail (no turn around spots, no way to pass another vehicle). it was slanted. it was twisty & turny. i don't think this trail was made for the jeep ride, as there was active mining going on in the area. i think it was just convenient that we got to use the trail. in our party there were 2 jeeps & a chevy 2500 3/4 ton trunk, with a newly licensed teenage driver at the wheel. we all had to stop & catch our breath after this part of the ride:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

in this one, i am stanind on flat ground, taking a picture of the slanted death trap trail behind us:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

both myself & the teenager were shaking a bit after we got thru that section. i'd be happy if they left that part OFF the map in the future.

we saw some sights, got a little sunburned & had a great time. our losing poker cards in the end:

CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR!!

there's building excitement here in town - a new building is being built right on the main drag, smack dab next door to carls jr. it originally was a small building, barely big enough for 3 people to turn around in. it was a drive thru home grown coffee stand. the inky dinky building was torn down & they are constructing a new thing. what will it be????

sorry for the angle - it was this or stand at the bottom of a very deep ditch
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

a starbucks building! personally i could care less. i don't drink coffee & i've tried their hot cocoa (less than desireable). right now starbucks has a kiosk thingee inside our albertsons. i'm going to assume they will keep the thing inside albertsons plus the standalone building. why? because albertsons is the pit stop for at least 4 tour busses coming from las vegas, daily. one person who used to work at albertsons told me that little kiosk thingee made $12k per week! it's a cash cow baby

i've spoken to a few of the crew, they tell me it is scheduled to be opened ~march. it will have indoor & outdoor dining tables. they only have a 1/2 acre site. the building doesn't look huge so i'm not sure how big the outdoor section will be.

Annnnddd the Starbucks has already started controversy. There are a group of some 1300 people who are planning a protest as Starbucks stole the land that a mom and pop coffee shop was on and opened their Starbucks there to steal business away.

Nothing goes smoothly here, people should stop moving to Pahrump. We are full,

things have been pretty slow around here lately - new homes are being built, but that is about it. last weekend the excitement was seeing the wild horses munching their way thru empty fields:

for point of reference, i am stopped on basin ave. just west of the "kamp k9". the picture with the dried grass is the old dairy (north of basin), the pictures with the green grass is the empty lot directly south of that on the opposite side of basin. after i snapped the photo of the horses in the old dairy field, i realized there were 2 or 3 more laying down in the field that i couldn't see. i wasn't about to disturb them any more than i already had.

they look pretty dang healthy

next up - starbucks! they are making good progress.

while i was there snapping pictures today, i ran into what i'm assuming was the general contractor. we chatted a bit. he says they are planning to open mid-march. they will keep the existing kiosk thing inside albertsons, will have a drive thru window (not sure if that will be open 24 hrs), as well as indoor & outdoor seating. he asked if the photos i take will be on fb, i told him no - that i had my own spot on the internet where i posted different things about town. he said hq wanted him to post a banner on the side of the building, when they got to that stage of construction, stating "WE'RE HIRING". he hasn't made it to that point yet, but asked me to post out here that they are indeed hiring.

he couldn't tell me if they were paying minimum wage or above, but he did share with me that there will be ~45 positions for this location; health care was included with all jobs (even part time!); plus all employees are encouraged to sign up for online college classes (university of phoenix, iirc) which starbucks would pay for. that's a pretty good deal for any job these days.

we are store #56049. they are looking for baristas & shift supervisors

it's been bone chilling cold here these last couple of days - daytime high ~45, low 20s at night. supposed to warm up later this week, to high 50s/low 60s during the day.

i heard tonopah was supposed to be 6 this morning. 6. that is without the ~30mph winds forecasted. brrrrrrrrr

i made a trip to tonopah last month & totally forgot to post the pictures (silly me!). not much has changed in town, but the belvada is looking SWEET!! the belvada is located on hwy 95, right smack dab in the middle of town, kitty corner from the mizpah hotel.

years back there was a discussion about the county purchasing the place & making it a meeting room/conference center kinda thing. i'm not sure if there is demand for that kind of thing up there?? thankfully that didn't happen, the current owners of the mizpah (the cline family) have purchased the belvada & are fixing it up. they are hoping to have it open & operational this year

history:
The historic Belvada Hotel was built in 1906.

The Belvada began as the State Bank and Trust Company building, It is said to have been the first high-rise in what would have been considered Southern Nevada back then.

The building was built with red bricks baked in Reno and stacked between pillars of solid granite. A barbershop was in the basement and a bank, an assay office and a bar called the Nevada Club on the ground floor. The rest of the building housed offices, Later it was converted into an apartment building that became a low-rent rooming house. It stayed that way until the 1980s, when it closed down.

The Belvada was named to the National Register of Historic Places on May 20, 1982.

i absolutely love the original details in the sidewalk. i have no idea if they play to keep this or if they plan to restore them, not sure exactly HOW they would restore them. beautiful purple glass squares all along the outside of the building:

this weekend was the hot air balloon festival here in pahrump. i wasn't sure it was going to happen, as this last week we had snow/rain & bone chilling wind. at the very last minute, everything stopped & it was perfect flying weather.

there were over 30+ balloons, oodles of vendors, a car show & a rodeo
