Are there any swap meets/flea markets in Pahrump other than the VFW one? Thanks much.

a bit of disappointing news this month - no donkey basketball this year there were scheduling conflicts. we'll have to wait until next year to enjoy the game.

however, this weekend is the annual hot air balloon festival!

feb 21 - 23 (fri-sun)
petrack park, corner of hwy 160 & basin
starting at 7am each morning (weather permiting)
30+ hot air balloons
80+ vendors
carnival rides
car show (saturday only)
rodeo

it is free to attend. it will cost $$$ if you want to ride in a balloon, or enjoy the carnival rides, or watch the rodeo.

i went away on vacation & when i returned...this is not the same nevada as when i left! with all the doom & gloom, let's chat about nice things for a change.

how about the balloon festival? yes it was way back in february (seems like forever ago) but i didn't have much of a chance to post the pictures here before i left on vacation.

there were 7 or 8 of 'em just outside my house that morning & quite a bit more on my way to work

we attended the night glow, which was kinda odd. they had these two ballooons tethered, which you could pay a small fee to take a tethered ride in:

in the next field over, on the other side of the 4" cyclone fence was the "VIP" section. where you could pay a larger fee & see the same thing. when i left there were 4 balloons setting up & some people mingling about. i guess you got to assist in the set up? i'm not entirely sure what the point was for the VIP section & i didn't stick around to find out.

the carnival company has changed this year, so the chamber of commerce had to some last minute changes

i don't make it to beatty very often <even less to tonopah>, so changes kinda stand out like a sore thumb to me whenever i pass thru town. i was hoping to have smoking j's bbq place open (originally posted october 2019), as they were anticipated to open in february this year.

no such luck. making progress, but they are not quite ready for business yet. they were staining the pergola beams whilst i was there

across the street from the bbq place was an eatery called kc's outpost. i didn't bother to get any photos of it, as it looked closed. it had a new sign out front but i wasn't sure if this place had opened, then failed miserably & closed it's doors? or if it was an up & coming location? there wasn't any activity so i didn't snap any pictures. now i know better:

on my way out of town for vacation, a bunch of hoodlums blocked the road. there were at least 15 of 'em, in all kinds of colors

i'm just glad we were the ONLY car on the road. if we were any closer to the spot they decided to cross the road, it would've been messy!

and lastly, how about an update on those unknown plants that were given to me?

they did really well on the front patio. the hummingbirds LOVED them. i decided to transplant 3 of them into one large container, as a few of them were root bound. i knew what 2 of the 4 plants were - one was a jade plant, the other was a pinwheel. https://worldofsucculents.com/aeoniu...nium-pinwheel/

i moved the jade plant indoors towards the end of the season. that left the pinwheel & the 2 unknown plants in the large planter outside. the other 2 unknown plants....i was befuddled. i searched & asked; asked & searched with no luck.

i thought maybe they were part of the kalanchoe thyrsiflora family
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalanchoe_thyrsiflora

but the flowers were all wrong. mine were bell shapped & orange. the ones i kept finding online were yellow & stood upright. i continued searching.

well....winter doesn't usually hit here until closer to christmas. right about halloween we had a really cold snap come thru - temperatures were dipping down to close to freezing at night (very odd). i moved the large container up against the house in a protected location. when i checked on the plants after the 1st night, things were not good. one of the unknown plants had basically melted - not knowing what it was, i had no idea what kinda temps it would tolerate. ok well then, i gotta figure out how to get this GINORMOUS planter into the house for the winter (whose stupid idea was it to plant them all in 1 container???) i am sure hubby wasn't thrilled when i said "hey we gotta move this inside & then outside when spring arrives". over the winter, i continued searching for what kinda plant it was. i lost one of the unknown plants during the winter. the pinwheel & the other unknown were doing ok.

it took months & months of searching before i finally figured it out!

it is a cotyledon orbiculata or red edged pig's ear:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotyledon_orbiculata
https://www.highcountrygardens.com/p...ulata-pigs-ear

i helped hubby move the large planter outside shortly before we left on vacation. i wasn't sure anything would survive, but at least it was outside again. when i left, we hadn't received any rain. when we returned, i was shocked to find it had rained almost 2 inches in ~2 weeks! that's half of our annual rainfall

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

i checked on the plants, surprisingly they aren't dead. they look dead, but LOTS of new growth on the pig's ear. the pinwheel is iffy at this point.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

we'll see how it progresses this year. if they survive, i guess i've gotta figure out a better solution than heaving this thing inside/outside every year

a deputy was shot multiple times this last week (march 25th) - he is ok, but recovery will take months.

deputies responded to a robbery, where the bad guy brandished a knife. during the investigation deputies found out where the bad guy was living. when they went to the door to ask questions about the incident, things went south very quickly.

the bad guy was pronounced dead on the scene.

warning - the video is fairly graphic, it includes body cam footage. it is....chilling to watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEk2...ature=youtu.be

there is a prayer box set up at mom's diner, all are welcome to deposit well wishes into the box. if you would like to send deputy cooper well wishes, i will gladly add them to the box for you. it will be given directly to the deputy at some point in the future.

A quick death was much more than that punk deserved. Apparently, he had not been held accountable in the past.
