waaaaaay back in post #10, i did a stand in the parking lot & turn in a circle while snapping pix. the casino in that parking lot is the mountain view casino. the original casino burned down to the ground in 2003, long before i was here: Kitchen Fire Destroys Mountain View Casino in Pahrump - 8 News NOW the current building is the rebuild. it's ok, nothing to write home about. i've eaten there a couple of times. the food is descent, as long as you can make it thru the wall of smoke to get to the restaurant you'll be fine.

driving thru town the other day when i came upon this interesting upcoming change:

haven't seen anything in the local papers about it yet, so i don't have the full details but, it makes me wonder a few things. i've heard rumors that mountain view is going thru financial difficulty, which would make their asking price (if they are asking) pretty reasonable. the other thought i had was, terrible's had 2 casinos out here already - the old terrible's town (now gold town) & terrible's lakeside (now lakeside). the food at these locations was HORRIBLE & i don't use that term often. they also had the worst smoke filtration system here in town. they experienced their own financial difficulty & were forced to sell both casinos here. if they couldn't do those 2 casinos well, what in the world makes them think they can do the mountain view casino any justice ???? can't wait to see what happens

if you are looking for something to do this weekend, the pow wow is coming to town! it is ALWAYS the weekend before turkey day & if you've never been - it is WELL worth it. totally free to get in & wander around. it's held at petrack park.

Pahrump, Nevada - Pahrump, Nevada Official Website | Visit Pahrump

the coordinators have done their best to make sure all of the vendors are native americans. the vendors have things like turquoise, kachina's of all sizes, bows & arrows, pottery, indian fry bread, drums, music, etc, etc. there is a sacred circle that the public is asked to not enter during the event. various tribes from around the US are invited to attend & show off their costumes, as well as their dancing skills which take place in/around the sacred circle. i believe there is a drum competition as well.

in the past there have been "windtalkers" attending the event as well. Code talker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia i know one of the main ones died a few years back, so i'm not sure if others will take his place ? he was fascinating to talk to.

Talking Tnx Cre8lite

We have been reading all your comments and looking at all you pictures on this Forum. We are considering moving to Pahrump. We however could not find enough info on Pahrump to get a good idea about it. Your comments were wonderful to read, educational and very informative.

Thanks and keep it up!!!

thanks! that's exactly what i was going for there's simply not enough (positive & candid) data out there about pahrump.

winter is coming - mt charleston got it's first layer of snow this weekend! we're on the tail end of a mighty cold weather front, so normally it wouldn't snow on the mtn for until next month or january. for those who are wondering what temperatures have been like, here's a brief history:

aug 1 = 106 degrees
aug 15 = 106
sept 1 = 95
sept 15 = 98
oct 1 = 92
oct 15 = 74 (brrrr! a 20 degree drop in 2 weeks!)
nov 1 = 74
nov 15 = 75

and today, nov 25 was 57 degrees. normally we should've been in the mid 60s. all temperatures listed above were found on accuweather.com, so every thing was about right....plus or minus 5 degrees

if you want to see our weather on a daily basis, i've got a buddy that maintains this weather station:

Current Conditions - Pahrump, NV Weather

it doesn't have an almanac, but it is a true representation of our weather in the pahrump valley. it's where i watch our annual rainfall. we normally get ~4 inches of rain each year (mostly jan/feb & then again during monsoon season in the summer). be sure to check out the rainfall on this weather page.....almost 7.5 inches so far this year! what does this mean? if you're planning a trip to pahrump you might want to come out during the spring & make time to visit death valley. when we have a really wet year, the following spring is a wonderful time to check out the wild flowers that have laid dormant in the surrounding desert areas for however long. just waiting for X amount of rainfall. BRING YOUR CAMERA!!!

I'll see what I can do to bring the almanac on line as the computer does store historical data.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

The weather dude...

it was brought to my attention that finding crime stats for pahrump can be challenging. i've done some digging around & found the answer

Nevada Department of Public Safety

each month, each substation sends reports to the state. once a year the state produces the UCR (universal crime report), which covers the entire state of nevada. when you select ucr 2012, it's very very very large pdf file - almost 300 pages - so do be patient. the map on page 3 gives you a good idea of exactly how large nye county is compared to the rest of the state.

page 40 (pdf page count) shows you nye county had 2 murders for the year. kinda interesting seeing what crimes are popular in each county....

brrrrr! it's been CHILLY lately. i saw on the news this morning that 70% of the u.s.a has seen snow & we aren't exempt. the temps since december 4th have been the worst. we went from ~63 degrees during the day & 43 at night to ~40 degrees during the day & ~20 at night. a good solid week of C O L D. we don't normally see these temperatures until january. we're supposed to warm back up into the ~60 degree range starting tomorrow

i snapped a couple of pix of my rosemary plant, complete with ice cycles. this morning there were small puddles of ice surrounding my lawn.

Just spent the last 4 months travelling back and forward to Pahrump from a small island off the coast of France called Guernsey 'Google it' !! looking at buying a property in Pahrump. Finally completed in November. Got to say as someone who has lived in different counties and travelled the world extensively I love Pahrump, its laid back attitude and the characters I've met living there. We researched the whole area and spend weeks travelling though Nevada and Arizona. Sure it has some issues but I've not met anywhere that doesn't. You can pretty much see Cherie's from my porch. I'm back over at the end of January to start some repairs and painting on the property. Can't wait to get more 'aquainted' with the town. Oh and on a side note went for a meal in the Winery in September. Excellent food. When the waitress found out we were walking back to Saddle West where we were staying (because of a few glasses of excellent wine) she suggested we wait about 45 mins and she'd run us back to the hotel. Now that's service

welcome to pahrump guernseydave! the waitress you mention is a good example of the home town feel we have here. yes we have some.....colorful people here, but there are a lot of good people here too. if you are broke down on the side of the road, SOMEONE will stop to help you out. i haven't figured out it it's the remote-ness? but the friends i have made here are more genuine than the other locations i have lived.
