cable service is extremely limited here - contact cma (now new wave
Internet « NewWave Communications ) 775-751-9008. they only cover some of the valley, not all of it.
centurylink doesn't exist here, neither does cox. you have cma/new wave or you have nothing for cable.
if you want dsl (i know, it's not what you desire), it's at&t & again, they don't cover the entire valley, only certain areas. plus i've heard they are no longer installing dsl service.
majority of people are on satellite out here. there have been rumblings for the last 2 yrs about a program that'll bring high speed internet to the rural areas of nevada, but just when the project gets rolling, there's some kind of set back & the project goes cold for months.
mmmmmm, cracker barrel - they NEED to come to town!!

since this is a town/county full of sin - casinos, alcohol, a strip club, brothels - what else could we possibly need? obviously we need an adult superstore to complete the collection! beatty & tonopah do not have such modern conveniences, they have to travel to pahrump or reno for this
the building looks massive, but it's not. only the bottom floor is the adult superstore portion, the top floor belong to another business. they are located on emery street, which is one block from the main road (hwy 160). if you do happen to visit this establishment, please note you are hit with a wave of cigarette smoke as soon as you walk thru the door. there is no smoking in the store, but smoking is allowed in the....ahem "watch a video" section of the store, which is a right turn as soon as you enter the front doors. the store itself is to the left.

what you can see from hwy 160:

a while back i can remember a certain business, i think a check cashing store or maybe a liquor store?, wasn't allowed to go into the strip mall on hwy 160 directly behind the adult superstore. why wasn't it allowed? because innocent school children would be able to see the sign from school grounds. o please! like they can't read the big "ADULT SUPERSTORE" letters from that same school grounds???? whatever that business was, they found another location to open.

I lived in Nye county briefly when I was a wee tot. In Manhattan, to be exact. I don't remember much. I do remember my mother befriending the owner of the local bar, a woman named Fern.
Apropos of nothing, I suppose.

o my! manhattan is but a speck on the map! according to wikipedia, as of 2005 the population was 124 people. i have never visited manhattan, but am aware of it's existance. i've heard the entire smoky valley has grown some, but it's still smaller than tonopah. one of our commissioners owns a large ranch in the round mtn area, but i have a feeling most people own ranches up in that area

Oh, 124! It has grown! When I lived there, the population was 22, including my family. We moved there because my father, a truck driver, went to work for some mine in the area. The company gave him a new single wide mobile home in Manhattan as an incentive to take the job. We had never lived in a mobile home, and my understanding is that my mother was very unhappy with both the home and the isolation.

looking for something to do this weekend? try goldfield days!
Goldfield Nevada Chamber of Commerce - Events
ok, ok....goldfield is not technically located in nye county, it is in esmerelda county. however, if you are traveling up us95 from pahrump/vegas to tonopah, you have no choice - you have to go thru goldfield. plus goldfield & northern nye county often share resources, such as judges or deupties or 911 calls. so i guess you could say they are a kissing cousin to nye county
i enjoy wandering the streets of goldfield & while it may not be much to look at, IMO it's cuter than tonopah.
if you are going thru goldfield BE CAREFUL! the speed limit is 25mph & is STRICTLY enforced. from what i've heard, the local cops are NOT lenient in any way.
goldfield is located 2 hrs north of pahrump & 30 mins south of tonopah, goldfield has ~270 people as of the 2010 census. waaaay back in the gold rush days, it was a booming town. now? not so much. they have a fabulous historical society & have fixed up a handful of the older buildings.
such as the historical goldfield hotel, which has been on many a ghost buster type tv show:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...6855/lightbox/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...3484/lightbox/
they have also fixed up the fire house & the courthouse/sheriff's dept. the courthouse/sheriff dept is the ONLY building that has been restored & currently occupied. the rest of the restored buildings are vacant. i've heard you can tour the courthouse/sheriff dept when court is not in session.
the current project is the old high school:

one of the newest businesses to open is the elite trading post. they have some fascinating things to look thru. books, bottles, roll top desks, ash trays, as well as pieces of furniture that i have no idea what they are
the owners moved up there from vegas, to escape the "rat race". that had to be quite a culture shock....
https://www.facebook.com/ELITETRADIN...OLDFIELDNEVADA
august 1, 2 & 3 is goldfield days. there will be a parade on saturday, starting at 9am, followed by street dancing, walking tours of "ghost houses", gold panning, a pet parade, poker run, swap meet & old west gunfighters. this year they are combining goldfield days with the land auction. esmeralda has no building dept & very few zoning laws, so in theory....buy a piece of property & never have anyone tell you what you can/can't do on your own property!

UPDATE !!! we finally have an update on the case of the alleged campaign sign stealing assistant sheriff, who is running for sheriff in this years election.
when the whole thing came down, our da decided to send the case to the attorney general's office:
"Nye County District Attorney Brian Kunzi said he had a conflict of interest in prosecuting the case because of his close working relationship with Marshall. The action taken against detective David Boruchowitz, president of the Nye County Law Enforcement Association, who was put on administrative leave temporarily, creates additional conflicts for him as DA, Kunzi said, in his position as a member of the labor management team"
Attorney general
after today's paper went to press, the ag's office released a statement that they are going to press charges against the assistant sheriff. a single count of misdemeanor, for injury of property, which carries a $500 fine. arraignment is set for sept 9th.
AG
it's nice to finally hear something back from the ag's office. usually the items that get sent over tend to fade away with no resolution. this campaign season is gonna be wildly entertaining.....

There are big BIG changes in store for Pahrump!!
THE RACE IS ON: Auto makers expected to spur more growth at Spring Mountain Motorsports | PV Times
UICN ready for Spring Mountain raceway | PV Times
Performance Driving Schools - Racing Schools - Motorsports Country Club | Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch
The key players in today’s tale:
Spring mountain raceway, post #3 (page 1)
The County
UICN (Utilities Inc)
The proposed fairgrounds site, post #197 (page 20)
First a little history, just so we’re all up to speed here. Waaaaay back when, long before I moved to town, there was a utility company here in town. I have no idea what that company was called, so we’ll just go with company X. I have no proof of any of this, just the words from a high ranking official in the County. The County had purchased/built some buildings & hooked them up to “city” water utility (company X). at some point thereafter, UICN purchased company X. UICN came to the County, stating they needed more money from the County, that the connection on the most recent building was under-charged. The County balked - that transaction was paid in full to company X & the price was mutually agreed up on by both parties. UICN didn’t care, they wanted the County to pay more. They went to court & surprise, the County won. Ever since then, it’s been like oil & water with the County & UICN.
And then there’s the history of the speedway. It was originally built in 1997, with 2.2 miles of track on ~125+ acres. The current owners purchased it in 2004 & have increased the track to a little over 6+ miles & they have purchased surrounding land over the years, so the facility is now sitting on 313 acres. The raceway is directly across Hwy 160 from the proposed fairgrounds site.
Fast forward to this year. The relationship between the County & UICN has gotten better, but they still aren’t friends.
At a recent BOCC meeting, May 19 2014, spring mountain raceway announced BIG plans! They want to add multiple activities to their lineup which will financially benefit Pahrump/Nye County. These additions include: a 200 room hotel on their property; 80 vacation homes; a man made 6 acre lake; additional driving schools; 50k retail space (which includes a movie theater, grocery store, fast food & sit down restaurants); 2 zip lines; 50 rv spaces; additional track & one more fire substation. Sounds good right? In order for the raceway to add all these cool attractions, they need water. The original piece of property is in UICN territory, the additional acreage they have purchased is not in UICN territory. They have applied to annex into UICN territory 3 times (at a cost of $180k for each application), each time UICN has denied them.
At this BOCC meeting, the raceway wanted to make an offer to the County. It seemed too sweet of a deal to pass up. The raceway would build their own water facility, estimated to cost ~$4.5 million. All they needed to do was get some direction from the commissioners as to WHERE they should build this water plant. They were ready to build everything today, but needed some help choosing the location. Here were their choices:
Option 1 – built on raceway property, given to UICN when completed
Option 2 – built on raceway property, given to the County when completed
Option 3 – built on fairgrounds property, given to UICN when completed
Option 4 – built on fairgrounds property, given to the County when completed
If the BOCC chose option 4, that would mean that when the time came to actually build something on the fairgrounds property, the County wouldn’t have to deal with UICN or fork over hundreds of thousands of dollars to them.
The County currently operates ~7 different utilities thru out the county boundaries, so it’s not like they don’t have some kind of experience handling another one, although I do believe none of them would be as large as this one. It’s no secret that the County is hurting financially, so there’s no way that they could afford to build their own utility company & yes they might have difficulties staffing this project right now. I’m sure they could’ve put something in the contract that says “raceway will build the water facility, County will take it over in year 2020” or something to that effect.
The public goes absolutely bonkers when there’s any kind of talk about the County taking over a utility company. Some of the most common phrases are “the government has no business doing this” or “you don’t have the expertise” or “you’re going to raise my rates” or “you’re going to cap my well”.
In the end, after much bickering over where & who….the raceway owners decided they will build the plant on their property & give it to UICN when it’s completed (option #3). What a wasted opportunity for the County! Which means the fairgrounds property will not be developed any time soon & when it finally happens….the County gets to make nicey-nice with UICN.
No matter what, at least we will be getting all of the cool attractions in the near future
Select item #16 (under Public Petitioner section) & see for yourself:
