Hi, We are a family of four that currently live in central Florida. After moving down here from up north we cannot stand it anymore! 2 years of the humidity, lack of culture, flat lands, and horrible economy! We are fed up and have family in Myrtle Beach that have offered there home to us for a few weeks to check things out for a possible move to the area. We have visited a few times but not for very long and always enjoy our time here but .... I wanted to ask locals what is day to day life like in MB? Hows the culture? COL seems good? Economy I know looks a bit tough but where is'nt it tough these days? how are public schools? online ive read some hit and miss grade scores ..... I'm coming to look for work doing just about anything to get us on our feet in the area. I then plan on starting a small business that I have done for the past few years once I can feel out the area. We enjoy the beach, small town feelings, family fun nearby, and a state that lets me freely support the 2nd ammendment! (Yes I am a CWPC! and Proud!) ... So if anyone can shed some light on any of my questions I would be most grateful! Thank You!!!

Well, let's see... Hot & humid, flat lands, horrible economy, permanent population of about 27,000 whose taxes provide the infrastructure for an average of about 300,000 temporary population every summer, 3 bike weeks per year, lack of culture - well, that's not entirely true. When we need a culture fix, there's always Myrtle Manor. Offhand, I can understand leaving FL, but I cannot imagine looking at MB as an improvement.

I've never lived in central FL but I agree to some extent with PD, it's hot and humid, flat and limited job opportunities here as well. As far as culture, it depends on what you're looking for...if you're looking for world class museums, ballet, opera, etc., you're not going to find that here. But you will find some very talented local productions, some surprisingly talented high school productions, a pretty good orchestra as well as the touristy shows.

My suggestion is that when you come for a few weeks to stay in your relative's house, spend the entire time looking around. Do not go to any of the tourist attractions, do not go to the beach, do not act like you're on vacation, etc. Act like you're moving to a place you've never been before. Buy the local paper every day and look through the ads, things to do (published inside the front page each day), read the local section...every story to see what's going on as far as good things and bad. Visit the grocery stores, schools, churches, try some restaurants away from the beach, visit some different neighborhoods that might interest you and stop people who are out for a walk and ask them the good/bad things about their neighborhood. Living here is very different than vacationing here...you can only afford to go to the touristy places so much and it becomes boring after awhile anyway.

As far as your question about what's daily life like here...well it's different for everyone based on their likes/dislikes but for us we enjoy the free concerts during the summer, the local concerts at the vineyard in Little River, we enjoy the friends that we've made, going to local theater productions in Conway, high school musical productions in Carolina Forest and Socastee (we're empty nesters but still enjoy good HS productions), occasional dinner on the beach, spending a weekend day at the beach, u-pick berry patches, roadside farmers stands, golf, walking in our neighborhood and talking with the neighbors, sitting on the back porch watching the hawks, and enjoying life.

What don't we like...the longer hot/humid summers, tourist traffic (but knowing the backroads will help avoid most of it), longer lines at restaurants in the summer, Food, homeowners insurance and electric cost more than where we came from. There's not much more we don't like.

As far as schools, there are good schools and bad schools. Horry County schools, in general, get pretty good marks. Here's a rating of schools Horry - EAA School Report Cards 2012 and here's the Horry County schools general report http://www.horrycountyschools.net/fi...web_layout.pdf Pick the right place to live based on what you want in a school.

Hope this helps some. Ask more specific questions if you have them.

I do not own any guns and will never own any guns. I guess I should change my moniker to "Unarmed_TMozer".

Hey Pawley...3 bike weeks? Uh...when are they you know? I love MB but, no bike week for me, sorry. I'll pick another date if necessary.

As for Myrtle Beach, I love it here, we extended our stay a week and will come again for a month in September. Today as we sat on the hotel balcony watching the ocean I told my wife that maybe we should get rid of our place in Chicago and all our furniture and other possessions and just live in hotels on the shore: a few months in Myrtle Beach, a few in Florida, a couple in Ocean City NJ and when we want to go back to Chicago for holidays and such just freeload off the kids. But I fear we're too conventional.

No, T, that's not a good idea in SC. You would be denounced and demonized as un-American, or even, God forbid, a Democrat.

Hey hogs - Yeah, the bike weeks aren't really a big deal unless you happen to land close to ground zero for one of 'em. None of them are actually officially "weeks", but there's a lot of arriving early and staying late, so it drags on a little either side of the official dates. Harley Bike Week is currenty underway, with the big parties this coming weekend. We're insulated from a lot of it, but there's a good bit of activity in Murrells Inlet and we get a kick out of just watching. There are some fine, high $$ bikes that pass thru. Black Bike Week is May 24-27, centered around Memorial Day, Most of the activity is in and around Atlantic Beach and North Myrtle Beach. The Fall Rally is Oct 2-6 this year. It's a much quieter event, and usually seems to come and go without a lot of attention.

CTYANKEE54, Thank You for the informative insight! I really appreciate it. We will do just that when we visit. I know the summers do last a bit longer than up north in MB but nothing compares to Florida trust me! In SC you can expect a winter or somewhat of one I know it tends to snow a bit there from time to time. But living in FL you can expect to never see snow again! And for our kids sake who are still elementary aged thats something they do enjoy as most kids to. So after living here not hot summer would ever bother us again lol.

TMOZER, That is your choice not to own any guns and I respect that. I would not attack you because of it and discredit you or your choice in a username. It is only a username lol. I feel one way as you may feel another. And thats the great thing of being american we are allowed our own individual freedoms however we may choose so.

IRISHTOM29, Thats fine. But again its my username thats all. No big deal lol. I do appreciate your info though!
