I know, that's why most travel magazines are awful because they are always featuring the best hotels. I guess they pay the ads . Lonely Planet's magazine is decent though.

Cambridge (UK): I don't know why... but I didn't find it beautiful.
Miami: I expected more "beach and terrase culture" maybe I am very used to Mediterranean summer life, not ugly but I liked more Fort Lauderdale for example.
I add Marseille... living there must be cool but I found it extremely dirty.
Zaragoza in Spain is also a bit dissappointing in my opinion.
San Sebastian: nice but not what I expected.

Can you elaborate on why London was a disappointment?

I would have to agree with Los Angeles, though my experiences date back to 2002.

Far too much of it was unsettled and filthy, with streets full of dilapidated buildings and undeveloped city blocks just left to rot as piles of rubble. Downtown is prosaic and unremarkable. The best areas, to my knowledge, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, had a faux-idyllic plasticky cheesiness to it that left me feeling somewhat empty. Even those areas, though well maintained to a degree, had an unidentifiably filthy vibe to it.

New York City would be second, though this is in part due to very high expectations. Once over the brief 'wow' factor of the skyline, the city is architecturally ugly, smelly, filthy and oppressive at street level, excluding some key areas. Manhattan felt much more 'ghetto' than expected - a big surprise. Central Park reminded me of Hampstead Heath in the 1990s - full of undercover gay guys checking each other out.

Sophie, don't take the bait. Huge poster is an LA booster until the end.

I agree, LA is overrated and isn't even a world class city. Americans in general think too highly of their cities, they see the enormous GDP and get arrogant. GDP = power, not culture which is something Anericans don't realize. And I'm from Anerica myself, I know how they are.

I have to agree with Los Angeles. Most of it feels like a huge suburb, not a compact and walkable city.
What's the point of that?

Every attraction there is so far spread out that it's very annoying. In fact, most people who haven't been there won't believe it. Hopefully, it will improve over time.
