We're lucky if we just hit 32 here in Brookings, SD.. the climate more resembles fairbanks Alaska than anywhere in the US.. it has to do with our location in the "coteau des prairies" and the fact we're too far east to benefit from chinook winds (Rapid City has a distinctly different/better climate), too far west to benefit from low pressure systems that bring in warm air, and too far north to just benefit from warmer air, plus the modest elevation rise causes any warm air from the south to cool as it rises... often it will be 10-15 degrees warmer with a significant difference in snow depth difference just 55 miles south in Sioux Falls. Can you spot the coteau des prairies on this snowdepth map?
The snow seems to be taking a more southerly track than they predicted by about 75 miles or so... it looks like we are going to stay in the snowband and get 4-6 inches rather than the 1-2 inches the GFS was predicting and 0-1 NAM was predicting a couple days ago (they have both adjusted their models south) , which will put the bullseye for the storm once it gets to eastern WI closer to Milwaukee rather than Sheboygan and Manitowac.
Forecast for next week's arctic blast. Lake effect could tamper with the cold somewhat, as reflected in Environment Canada's forecast. The Weather Network has us missing the snow, thus colder. We shall see.
