Spring break? In February? That said, there's not been the slightest sign of a pattern break (as opposed to 1-3 day interludes) as far as the forecast models can foresee, which is through the first week of March. Personally, I believe mid to late March is the earliest a warm pattern might take hold, and probably not until April or later.
End of Feb and first week of March is spring break for some colleges. Good time to escape to Florida I guess.
Not surprised. He's insinuating that the UHI is minimal.
No, I was saying it was minimal on the example you first gave: where Long Island was only 1-2°F colder than the city. It obviously isn't this morning.
As for the last three days of the month, the AccuWeather long-range forecast has morning lows in the 10s and afternoon highs in the 20s all three days. The average morning low temperature in Pittsburgh between now and the end of the month ranges from 24°F to 27°F, and the average afternoon high ranges from 40°F to 43°F. So what I'm wondering is, do you think it's possible, or even likely, that Pittsburgh will end February with an average temperature that's 10°F or more below normal?
Last time we did so was February 2007, which turned up even colder than January 2014. Also note the double-digits below zero forecast for Thursday evening/Friday morning. If that verifies, it'll be the first zone 5 reading in February since 1979.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say we beat Feb 2007's anomaly (5th coldest) and have a solid chance of beating that of Feb 1934 (4th coldest); coming within a degree of Feb 1979's avg, the record coldest, is within the realm of possibility depending on how much snow cover is eaten up this weekend.
My calculations use the NWS forecast for KPIT up until Wednesday afternoon, combined with Accuweather after that; also, beyond Friday afternoon, uses the naive assumption that the high and low for the day occur in the afternoon and morning, respectively. Final result: 18.7F, which would edge out Feb 1963 for 2nd-coldest February and beat Dec 1989 for 5th-coldest month (of any month).

What it's interesting is we've been colder this winter than either Pittsburgh or Lexington (and average colder) but we haven't been to record a sub-10°F once, though we came close a number of times. Plenty of very cold sub zero nights but no very cold afternoons. It seems like the interior can reach colder afternoon highs than us, even for warmer places overall. But not for nights / lows.
Going to be a cold night in the Red River valley of the North (ND/MN). At 830 pm.... -20F in Fosston Minnesota -19F at Emerado ND just west of Grand Forks. Light wind though.
I guess they are only allowed to use that term when it affects the Midwest and South lol.
