No tax dollars should go to treating addicts. If druggies want the government out of their lives, let them pay for their own treatment. If you've got the money to do drugs in the first place, you can get your own rehab.

Money already goes to treating addicts in our current system.
There have been clear majorities in favor of Ending the Drug War in this country. Police and the government have continued to become more intrusive. In many states, governments have started making citizens submit to blood or urine at DUI checkpoints. If they do not, they are charged with a DUI.

It should end if we take the government out of the picture. Let addicts overdose -- isn't that their right? If they have money for drugs in the first place, they have money to pay for their own treatment, or they could buy rehab insurance.
For some loser to waste all his money on drugs, lose his job and health and then expect responsible types to pay for all his wants and needs and hospital stays is goofy.
I was raised with the belief that we are all responsible for our own actions... If you make your bed, you sleep in it. I do support the legalization of drugs, only because the drug war has failed due to the corruption within our own government. That said, I don't believe the american taxpayer should be on the hook to treat drug addiction. There are consequences to the decisions we make in life.

So does that mean we shoudn't treat chirrosis if the liver, lung cancer, or diabetes (adult onset), since they are all caused by addictions?

I'm just stating that its already in our federal budget.
Not all addicts overdose and many are functioning "addicts." What I'm advocating is diverting funding from the DEA and law enforcement to rehabilitation services for the general public. Whether through court order (option of jail time and/or rehab) or through personal choice, the places would accomodate those who enter.
If reducing the number of addicts is the true goal of the government (which some would argue it should be) then that would be the best route. Voluntary centers. Involuntary or low-risk centers. And Higher end options for the private market.
Instead of funding nation building and giving huge amounts to other countries we need to start solving our own problems.
The U.S. holds 5% of the World's population but houses 25% of its prisoners.
That's quite a sad, but telling, statement.
