It's not that simple. Right now this is a two dose series and there needs to be an orderly way to record who has got dose 1 and needs to come back for dose 2 (and there needs to be a dose 2 ready for them when appropriate). On top of that, if the floodgates were opened right now to everyone, there would be traffic jams and fights in the parking lot since demand exceeds supply.

Am I the only one who is unclear about how the Phase 2 & 3 distribution is going to work in MA? For example, Phase 2 includes people with the co-morbidities. How are they going to get notified that it's their turn? Presumably their physician has to be involved because of HIPAA?

Similarly, I hope they have a rational scheme worked out for Phase 3 also, that doesn't have people queuing up in sidewalks or parking lots. I remember queuing up for H1N1 vaccine in 2009, but that demand wasn't anywhere as high as this one is going to be.

The only proper and realistic way for phase 2 to go properly is for doctors to invite these patients to their office for a vaccination clinic.

The only way Phase 3 doesn't turn into an absolute disaster is if there are enough doses on hand to vaccinate the entire population before it begins.

Yeah, but supply aside...what's the scheme/process/logistics? Has anyone worked that out? Is that in the purview of Marylou Sudders? What I'm saying is this has not been communicated to my knowledge. We know that Florida has initiated a "first come, first serve" policy as their "plan" which would be a disaster.

Unfortunately this appears to be another situation where they're flying by the seat of their pants. If they have an actual plan, they haven't shared it with the public yet (yes there's a website but it looks more like an ideal version of how things should work and leaves most of the questions unanswered).

It'd be better than sitting on 200k doses for no reason like MA is right now.

Looking at the info on the state vaccination site, it appears that:
  1. Currently, they are vaccinating healthcare workers, and residents and staff of senior homes
  2. Healthcare workers are being vaccinated by trained personnel at their own facilities
  3. Long term care residents and staff are being vaccinated by trained reps from CVS, Walgreens and MHA network pharmacies
  4. As of Dec 31, 285,000 vaccine doses have been shipped to Massachusetts and 79,000 have been administered

Not even Mass General Brigham managed the allocation process for their own employees. https://www.boston.com/news/coronavi...eneral-brigham

It looks like there was still supposed to be prioritization within their staff of who got vaccinated when, and perhaps to streamline things, they didn't try to impose or verify this order, they just told people what the order should be and left it to them to behave responsibly. That didn't happen. At least not well enough. Disappointing.

A nice discussion of the approval of the new mRNA vaccines moderated by Howard Bauchner, editor of JAMA and featuring Stephen Hahn, head of the FDA, and Peter Marks, head of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER). This originally aired on December 14th, when Moderna's approval was still pending.
