It's going to get cooler soon and I am very pleased. Way too many motorcyclists out already. Some trees trying to come out in NH, and lows will be in the low 20s by next week.

Lilacs, pear tree and even Japanese Maples budding. Poor trees. They get salt from Tropics, radation from Japan. Excessive waters. Wind. Weight of snow. Late leaf change from warmth. Early budding from warmth. Dry ground. It's safe to say they have been under a lot of stress lately.

As far as “warm weather”…we should keep in mind that the very warm temps of late basically used up what was left of the time when “cold weather” has a chance of occurring. By next week, all area NWS stations have modestly warm daytime highs (50 – 55 F) and the mean high for the month of April is into the 60’s at all area NWS stations. So even if we stayed right at absolute normal (I don’t see that right now), temps would have to average well below normal to see anything even remotely cold. We might see a few fleeting frosty nights here and there in parts of Connecticut, the lower Hudson Valley, and interior New Jersey before mid April…but otherwise there seems to be little chance of any truly cold air reaching us again mid November.

It will not be THIS warm heading into next week…yet mean temps STILL look to be above normal for the East Coast for the last week of the month. In fact, as a low comes across the Plains late next week (28- 30th) - don’t be surprised to see another warm surge into the Tri-State/Middle Atlantic region. We could again see highs approach 65 - 70 F across the area.

As far as the medium term - most still think April and May should average above normal for much of the eastern USA. One of the theories on this is that it has been hotter and drier than normal this past winter/early spring to our south; Most NWS stations in the subtropical Gulf and south Atlantic states (Texas to South Carolina) are in modest drought mode already. Dry soil seems to create more arid conditions and chronic high pressure. This could translate into frequent sunny and hot conditions for the Gulf/South Atlantic region... and any southerly advection would send that heat surging northward right toward us. So it would not surprise me at all - if we had a semi-warm/or close to normal April, then May turned hot, and June – Sept was even hotter than out typically hot summer. I would watch the drought from South Carolina southward/westward to the southern Plains for clues about late spring/summer/early fall temps and rainfall for us.
