Relocation
New Orleans is a mosaic of neighborhoods. One of the cornerstones of development here was the growth in the 19th and 20th centuries of working- and middle-class ethnic neighborhoods of immigrant populations—Irish, Italian, German, French, Spanish (including Canary Islanders, known locally as Isleños), descendents of the city’s earliest Creole and African-American inhabitants, and, most recently, Vietnamese. During the past 60 years, a confluence of population growth, demographic shifts, economic upswings and downturns, and social change has transformed some neighborhoods dramatically, while others have barely been touched by the passage of time. Meantime, the development and growth of suburbs, some of which were wooded wetlands only three decades ago, has been nearly mind-boggling.

Description: The Archdiocesan Department of Special Education was founded in 1964 with St. Michael’s Special School for Exceptional Children as its focal point. The school is designed to help students with significant difficulties in learning. The program employs a low student-teacher ratio, specialized techniques in ungraded levels, and an atmosphere of love, order, and relaxation. The elementary program serves children age 5 to 16 in an academic climate. The secondary, vocationally oriented level works with students age 16 to 21. Academics are balanced with job-training skills to prepare young adults for the world of work. After age 21, students attend the Joy Center, a sheltered activity facility at which they follow the school schedule but also take part in work-related activities.
