Description: When financier and philanthropist Isidore Newman founded the Isidore Newman Manual Training School in 1903, he envisioned a superior education for the children of New Orleanians as well as those of the Jewish Children’s Home. He hoped to provide skilled, competent, and well-trained labor for the local workforce. In the next 100 years, this Uptown institution developed into one of the city’s finest college prep schools. The population has grown almost tenfold to nearly 1,000 students in prekindergarten through 12th grade. The original Jefferson building now opens onto an 11-acre campus of 14 buildings set against a backdrop of playgrounds, patios, greenspaces, and an athletic playing field. Curriculum is infused with technology in every classroom. The school offers a challenging academic curriculum that emphasizes sequential development of courses in basic disciplines—English, math, science, foreign language, history, the arts, computer science, and physical education. More than 40 team sports are offered to 7th through 12th graders, and the school’s debate team has won national titles. The school’s library boasts 47,000 volumes, and the media center offers additional technological resources. Most of Newman’s graduates attend college. Choices have included Amherst, Boston University, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale.
