Description: Established in 1879 as St. Isidore’s College, Holy Cross (as it was later called) is the second oldest Holy Cross institution in America—beat out only by a place in South Bend, Indiana, called Notre Dame University. As has been the trend among Catholic high schools in recent years, Holy Cross has expanded to include a middle school—now educating boys in fifth through 12th grades. Average middle school class size is 22; high school is 29. The school offers a broad curriculum that includes an honors program and comprehensive college prep courses. Recent graduates have attended such universities as Auburn, Emory, George Washington, and Vanderbilt. The Holy Cross’s band program has been part of the school since 1894. The band includes several performing groups and has helped a high percentage of students earn music scholarships to college since 1989. Admission to Holy Cross is based on transcripts, standardized test scores, conduct, and interview.
