Description: Ursuline Academy was established in 1727 by the Ursuline nuns as the first school for girls in the United States. Holistic education is designed to educate the whole person—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically. Ursuline is a private, independent Catholic school with an 11.5-acre campus in Uptown New Orleans. The school museum displays documents from Presidents Jefferson and Madison as well as religious artifacts dating from the Spanish colonial period to the present day. The campus also includes the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, whose statue has been venerated by New Orleanians for more than 150 years. Many locals believe it was Our Lady of Prompt Succor who protected the city during the great fire of 1812 and the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Currently, the school educates 720 girls, toddlers through 12th grade, with an average class size of 20 students. Eligible high school students can enroll in honors, accelerated, or advanced-placement courses and 99 percent of graduates go on to college.
