Description: Founded in 1915 by Katherine Drexel of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (nuns dedicated to serving the educational needs of Native and African Americans), Xavier is the only historically black Catholic university in the United States. And that’s the least of its distinctions. Under the direction of Dr. Norman Francis, who became the school’s first African-American lay president in 1968, Xavier has grown into a science powerhouse, especially in the areas of pharmacy and pre-med. The campus, with a mix of contemporary architecture and Gothic design, is located in the residential neighborhood of Mid City. Current enrollment is more than 4,100 students, of whom approximately 90 percent are African American. Approximately 86 percent of the 214 fulltime faculty members hold the highest degrees in their fields.
