Description: A small band of nuns, the Marianites of Holy Cross, arrived in New Orleans from LeMans, France, in 1853. An ambitious bunch of educators, they began establishing schools throughout the state. In order to supply teachers to the schools, the Holy Cross Normal College was established in 1916. Today, nestled on 15 tree-shaded acres, Our Lady of Holy Cross College is located in Algiers (a tiny portion of New Orleans on the West Bank of the Mississippi River). The coed liberal arts college educates 1,250 full- and part-time students. Along with education (still the school’s strong suit), the school offers master’s and bachelor’s degree programs in business, humanities, and natural and social sciences. Nearly 72 percent of the 52 full-time and 102 part-time faculty hold terminal degrees. The student-faculty ratio is 22:1.
