Description: Established in 1958 as part of the Louisiana State University system to bring public-supported higher education to the state’s largest urban community, the University of New Orleans sits on a 195-acre parklike campus along the shore of Lake Pontchartrain, as well as the 200-acre east campus, which houses the UNO Arena. UNO has fully accredited programs in business studies and nationally recognized programs in hotel, restaurant, and tourism administration as well as jazz studies founded by jazz great Ellis Marsalis. The College of Engineering boasts one of only five naval architecture and marine engineering programs in the nation and the only one in the South; the college of education is the state’s largest and one of Louisiana’s top producers of certified teachers. Eighty percent of the school’s 700 faculty members hold doctorates. UNO’s 12,000 students come from all 50 states and 97 countries. Half the student body is over age 25. Most students live off campus, although the school does offer both coed dorms and married student housing.
