The morning low temperature in Athens, GA yesterday (January 2) was 11°F, which was not only a record, but also the coldest it's been since January 8, 2015 (11°F). In fact, only January 7, 2014 (7°F) has been colder this decade.
Wow, snow and ice in northern Florida. My aunt sent me a picture of my uncle's farm in Mayo, FL and there's ice everywhere. I called my other aunt (my uncle's husband) and she said it was an ice storm, they didn't get snow but everything is iced over and they're out of power. I saw Tally got snow, though I'm sure it melted by now. Anyone know how accurate the snow cover map is? It says parts of the lower panhandle have as much as EIGHT inches.
Here's a pic of the ice storm at the farm.

Quite windy and for a long time today. First 100 km/h gusts around 4:30 am with horizontal rain woke me up in the middle of the night. 100 kph gusts went on until 1 pm at Roissy airport, up to 72 mph.
Over the past week in northern IL and Milwaukee temps have ranged from -11 F to 12 F (-24 C to -11 C) with wind chill advisories 3 or 4 of those days (wind chills between -25 F and -30 F [-32 C to -34 C]) and the other days wind chills were between -10 F and -20 F (-23 C to -29 C). When it gets back to seasonal averages, highs around 32 F/0 C with lows around 18 F/-8 C it's going to feel like spring.
Even though it has been very cold, about 20 to 30 degrees below average, we've had so many sunny cloudless days. IMO the extreme cold and sunshine beats the seasonal temps and snow. Snow sucks.
Aren't "Aleutian cyclones" basically continuous in the winter?
