Longest snow-free periods entirely within winter (December 1 - February 28/29), Bowling Green, KY. Snows outside of winter are in parentheses, but don't count for the record: the snow-free period has to be entirely in winter.
Just goes to show how crap-tastic the winter of 2016-2017 was: only two snowy days in winter itself (three total in the cool season). I remember being tee'd off about it then.
2018-2019:
19 days (Dec. 23 - Jan. 11)
2017-2018:
23 days (Feb. 5 - Feb. 28 / end of winter)
2016-2017:
54 days (Jan. 5 - Feb. 28 / end of winter)
2015-2016:
23 days (Dec. 18 - Jan. 10)
2014-2015:
38 days (Dec. 1 - Jan. 7 / from beginning of winter)
2013-2014:
23 days (Dec. 10 - Jan. 2)
2012-2013:
24 days (Feb. 3 - Feb. 27)
2011-2012:
32 days (Dec. 1 - Jan. 2 / from beginning of winter)
2010-2011:
17 days (Feb. 11 - Feb. 28 / end of winter)
2009-2010:
18 days (Dec. 1 - Dec. 19 / from beginning of winter)
Here's something interesting... NYC has 79 days with precip so far this year which is 2nd most to date.
In the Top 10 number of days with precip to date, NYC matches when the sun was inactive.
Back to back yrs now. #SolarMinimum
I don't have the sun spot graph before 1977 on hand but I'm sure it would be interesting dating back further as well. I'll have to get more active in the Solar Thread
Philly's Max temp is 68° today. That makes it 3 yrs in a row </= 68F happened before Sept 10th.
I don't think that happened a lot in recent decades. 3 in a row? Solar Minimum?
The last time the high and low were exactly 62 / 55 F (16 / 13 C) in Nashville was...
March 30, 1990!
It also rained 0.33" that day.
1981-2010 averages are 4 means of 58.5 F per year, 6 highs of 62, and 5 lows of 55.
But all 3 only matched up once in 30 years.
62/55's would tend to be cloudy and/or rainy because it's a small 7 F / 4 C diurnal range. I wonder where would have the most 62/55's in the world? Probably some oceanic climate with a small diurnal range and either a winter or a summer mean temperature near 58-59 F / 14-15 C. Coastal Southeastern Alaska perhaps? Maybe the southwest coast of Norway (like Bergen?)
I've been through a 63/55 (Bowling Green, KY, April 24, 2018). I could use a nice 62/55 after this long, hot summer!
(By the way, if you prefer Celsius, 62/55 means a high of 16.4 - 16.9 C and a low of 12.5 - 13.0 C, these Celsius values would give Fahrenheit values of 61.5 - 62.5 and 54.5 - 55.5, which would round to 62 and 55. A day with a high of EXACTLY 62.0 F / 16.7 C and a low of EXACTLY 55.0 F / 12.8 C would be incredibly rare, so a high of, say, 62.3 and a low of say, 54.8 counts just as much as long as both round to 62 and 55)
Anchorage, AK... by every measure, 2019 has been a hot year for them.
Snow depth was ZERO as of yesterday (December 15), the first December 15 in history with no snow on the ground.
All time record high was set on July 4 at 90 F / 32 C.
December also set a record high at 51 F / 11 C on December 9.
Every month has been above average. In the 348 days of the year through December 14, only 55 have been below average. The rest have been above average. That's 84% that have been above average!
All three summer months as well as November were the warmest on record. December has a good chance. The year as a whole is very likely to be the warmest on record.
No day from May 31 to September 21 inclusive was below average (by daily mean). Every day in the summer was warmer than average.
They comfortably make Dfb this year with both May and September averaging above 50 F / 10 C. 2019 becomes only the 5th year (since 1954) to make Dfb by both May and September.
Every day from March 6 to November 24 had a high above freezing.
Keep in mind AVERAGE highs are only above freezing from March 11 to October 31.
The average year has its last below-freezing high in spring on March 31 and the first one in fall on October 24.
That's -103.5 F. In early fall. -73.3 C is -100 F so this is their earliest -100 on record.
