2nd earliest out of the 27 winters I’ve lived through, quite early but not terribly unusual given the large number of early December dates.
So twice in November past 4yrs there? Interesting. Those in early December were 1 week in so makes November more interesting.

Early snows. Early cold. Not for same location but I see a trend. Started with Edmonton in September. Plains states in October. Northeast in November. Mid Atlantic in December. But I can go back to 2013 when it started.

Dare I say Solar Minimum? More clouds on Earth when sun output is low.

The average date of the first ice day of the winter over my lifetime is December 16.

Past five years (2014-18) is December 14, so not much difference. The first ice day of the winter of 2015-16 was January 18, second latest in my life, so that influences that average too. Not surprising given that infamously torchy December.

Interesting that the only two in November were in the last four years. Wasn't expecting the winter of 2012-2013 to be the latest. That winter felt raw and cold from just after Christmas to the end of March, must have had a lot of those just above freezing cloudy days.

I'm going to look at more years. Was there ever an ice day before November 18 in the weather records, and how long ago was it? How common are November ice days? Might do one for last ice day as well. I wonder which is earlier: latest first ice day (which in my life is January 22) or earliest last ice day?

Looking at an average is kinda BS because look at 2015-16's date. Big Anomaly so its skewing the Average.

Records since 1893 there and these are the only times Ice day was hit in November.

Twice in past 4 yrs. Last time was 1979. Wonder if its a trend this decade like 1970s?

Average mean temperature in some cities in Montenegro in January 2017, and deviation from average.

Left is deviation of temperature from average.
Temperatures were of -2,6c to -4,6c lower than average in these places.
Žabljak had -8,7c in January 2017, and average mean for January 1981-2010 is -4,5c https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Žabljak#Climate

The Oklahoma City area is in a serious snow drought. They haven't seen 2" of snow from a single storm since March 2015, and they haven't seen a 4" storm since 2011. Both are the longest time without that amount of snow on record. Additionally, since March 2015, they have only had 4.5" of snow, while they'd normally get 25" in that time. That's a paltry 18% of normal! They've also only had two days of lying snow since then, while they'd get about 21 in that time on average.
Interestingly enough, there is actually a slight upward trend in snow totals in the long term.

A look at the temp and snow Departures for December.

As you can see, 5 of the last 7 Decembers have ended up above normal with temps.

In fact, only 9 since 1990 have been below normal.

Look at those snow departures from 1977 to 1987. Not 1 December ended up with above normal snowfall. Yikes.

The only times November was snowier than December here was 1953, 1978, 1989, 2012. Only 4 of 69 yrs on record.

Of those 4 yrs, this is how the rest of winter ended up.......

1954 had a snowy January but nothing in February. Ended up as 15th Warmest winter

1978-79 was 7th coldest thanks to a crazy Feb.

Jan 1990 was 2nd warmest

2011-12 was warmest winter.

NONE of those years had a crazy snowy winter. (Using Dec-Jan-Feb only). Something about early snows that really messes up the pattern. Same for October snows. It's like the pattern forgets to come back.

In Toronto, November is on average 5.4 degrees warmer than December.

This year so far, 6 of the 16 days in December were WARMER than exactly one month ago in November. (And soon to be 7 of 17)

And only 2 of the 16 days in December were MORE than 5.4 degrees colder than exactly one month ago, even though the difference between November X and December X is supposed to be bigger as X is smaller.

Comparatively in 2017, there have been only 3 instances where December X was warmer than November X, and 7 other instances where December X was within 5.4 degrees colder than November X.

The hottest day of the year 1990 in Rochester New York didn't occur in the summer. It occurred on Saturday April 28th when the mercury reached 93 degrees, a staggering 35 degrees above the average high temperature for April 28th.
