"NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CARIBOU ME
620 AM EDT FRI JUN 20 2014
A COLD MID LEVEL LOW VISIBLE ON WATER VAPOR ACROSS NORTHERN NEW
BRUNSWICK EARLY THIS MORNING WILL MOVE TO CAPE BRETON ISLAND BY 00Z
THIS EVENING...AND WILL PASS JUST SOUTH OF NEWFOUNDLAND TON.
THE LOW WILL BRING AN ANOMALOUSLY COLD AIR MASS TO THE CWA TODAY. ALL OF THE OPERATIONAL MODELS HAVE 850 MB TEMPS OF 0C ALL THE WAY DOWN INTO CENTRAL MAINE AT 12Z. IF THERE ARE ANY ISOLATED SHOWERS THEY COULD FALL IN THE FORM OF SNOW ON THE TOP OF MT KATAHDIN THIS MORNING!"
Ended up falling to 69F this morning, but only momentarily. Going to 88F in the afternoon with a 60% chance of more thunderstorms. Hope this pattern lasts all summer.
Uh-oh. Is this at all similar to the pattern we had late winter/early spring? That time feels so far off.
Pretty much without the umph of the Polar Jet Stream and cold air aloft. The general pattern has been the same for a few months now. (Since April).
While we can find "similar" looking maps with even winter months, for fun Check this one out...
Current 500mb heights on left.. 500mb heights from Feb 12th on right.
Upper Low near Nova Scotia and central Canada. Naturally more amped up in the winter with the digging trough but the ULL's have continued to show up. How is a southeast ridge supposed to get sustained for Hot temps in the East if these ULLs keep carving out the atmosphere?
The result from Feb 12th. Afternoon temps and radar and snow reports. Moral of the post... This pattern today in February would result in temps like this in the East or colder.
Replica situation of this time yesterday, upper 80s dewpoint low 70s and storms gaining intensity to the northwest as we approach 5:00. Sitting outside watching convection. Getting some cool outflow right now.
Just got back from the shore.. it was a fantastic day for it. Sunny, but with a rather chilly seabreeze. The ocean was surprisingly warm for the month of June - and even before the summer solstice! As always, the water takes a little getting used to, but not too much today at all, and once I'd submerged in the water, I found myself wanting to keep my whole body below my neck underwater because at that point, the air, especially with the breeze, felt a lot chillier than the ocean. LOL.
Feels so nice out, but hard to believe it's summer.
