What? It's easy to hit six figures before your forties with Highmark or UPMC if you've got the skills they're looking for. Never worked at PNC or Mellon but I've heard the same from older coworkers.

The highest paying jobs in western Pennsylvania are downtown and in Oakland.

Pittsburgh is going to be hit very hard because the economy was weak here to begin with
Most places will be hit hard. Pittsburgh's current economy doesn't make it a worse situation.

Pittsburgh and Cincinnati is basically our twin.
While I don't think that there is a huge gap, they are not twins. Cincy has a history of overt conservatism that Cleveland, Columbus and Pittsburgh has not had.

When you start off with an economy “that isn’t robust to begin with”, it only gets worse in a time like this.

I like that about Cincy.

Downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland are the second and third largest concentrations of jobs in the state after downtown Philadelphia. I don't think Thorn Hill Industrial Park is going to be taking the crown from them any time soon.

No, if anything, WFH will be the interesting dynamic this decade.

I have worked at UPMC and at Highmark, and work from home was an offered perk for both for as long as I worked there.

Some people worked 100% remotely.

The balance my change, but there will still be a need for office space.

Working from home also doesn't work if you're out in the middle of nowhere with 5mbit DSL.

ehh, vpn does not require high speeds in general, if you don't use high def video. I doubt most companies vpns even support that in general. very basic internet speeds can be just fine for vpn. even 1 0r 2 Mbps is ok for non video work from home , and that is everywhere.

I'm not using a VPN for whatever reason at this job, it's all remote desktop.

My wife's job involves a lot of remote desktop too.

When I was working VPN through my previous job I had to push very large datasets around regularly, low speed or asymmetric internet is a no-go for me.

It’s looking like Pittsburgh may not survive this pandemic. They won’t get money because the city is small and likely under 300,000 people. It’s tragic for sure.
