Well to be fair, Pittsburgh is over 100 miles from the closest major city, so it kind of is in its own mini region. And technically it's not in the Appalachian mountains, it's just in the foothills, like Cincinnati or Louisville. And besides, Appalachia isn't a legal region. Legally, Pittsburgh is in the Northeast, it's just the most western city in that region.

Pittsburgh is geographically east of Charlotte and Miami....yet still pretty far from the ocean. It's somewhat close to Cleveland and Cincinnati but the influence of NE cities like Philly and NYC are extremely obvious all over Pittsburgh.

So yes, its a very unique location that defies categorization.

Cleveland is more liberal than Pittsburgh and Cincinnati is basically our twin.

There weren't any political implications to my post, by "influenced by", I just mean the way things look. Since you bring up Cincinnati and Cleveland though, they seem like places that doesn't really fit a geographic category either.

This virus is really taking its toll on the job market. A friend of mine worked for a local manufacturer and did supply chain and lean manufacturing for all the facilities. Worked for the company for 13 years and was making over 100K. Their job was just permanently eliminated. What a shame.

is that directly related to the pandemic? in manufacturing, there is restructuring done all the time. is he union? they might have let him go because they realize he is making TOO much, maybe above his value.
or, maybe he is just not that smart, hard to work with, or has body odor and they do not like him being there.

No layoffs at UPMC, Highmark, PNC, or BNY Mellon yet. Still plenty of good high-paying jobs.

(Of course Mellon and PNC did most of their laying off in 2019.)

It is directly related to the pandemic. This person was management and non union. The company paid tuition in full to complete an advanced degree at Carnegie Mellon. They had to stay 3 more years or reimburse the company tuition costs. They had one year left and it didn’t matter. They are also in their mid 30s. Projects and expansion were cancelled. Downsizing and getting rid of the younger educated management. Very few if any places pay 6 figures a year in Pittsburgh.

It’s a shame but the fallout from this pandemic is going to be catastrophic. Pittsburgh is going to be hit very hard because the economy was weak here to begin with. It may get pushed down and not come back for a while, years or longer.

This is just the beginning.
