red desert (1954). richard harris is in it. maybe the only fact i'll remember about this forgettable film. the emperor has no clothes. this is a bad movie. meandering story, if you can call it that, poor acting, probably a media darling when it came out because of who the director was (michelangelo antonioni).
after earth (2013). m.n.s. needs to stay away from cgi. his better movies, imho, rested on story (signs, unbreakable, the village, the happening, lady in the water, the sixth sense), for the most part. i got the feeling that they had the story and jumbled together the beginning to fit where the story started. the seam was obvious. jaden's performance kept the movie going. i gave it a 2 out of 5 stars.
Last night I watched a 2012 documentary, My Amityville Horror, focused around Danny Lutz, who was 7-yrs old when he, his mum, siblings & stepdad moved into the supposed haunted house in NY for about 1-mo.
When I was a teen, I read all the books on the house, pro & those calling the whole debacle a hoax. Decades later, I still haven't made up my mind & this documentary doesn't help one decide, imho. It's not the greatest documentary I've ever seen, partially as although Danny is half small, frightened, wide-eyed boy from a dysfunctional household, he's also half angry, somewhat macho jerk, who still won't grow up or allow himself to get over his childhood... the latter got of my nerves after awhile. I simultaneously felt sorry for little Danny & wishing someone would plant a steel-toed Doc Marten squarely in adult Danny's backside.
Without revealing anything, overall, I get the impression he's hiding something... but, is it just inner demons of a far too carefree life carelessly spent, still being haunted by a genuine haunting, still not knowing if his 7-yr old memories were real & true or a life-long of held in known mistruths? I tried to remain open minded, yet looked for tells which might reveal what I wanted to know... you can watch & decide. I came away more confused than with answers.
There are interesting small gatherings of people in the film, most who were present in some capacity... I wish they were focused on more throughout... who offer up their views at the time & afterwards, many years later. One such group are psychiatrists/psychologists, another are reporters/newsroom workers, another is a sort of psychic psycho-analyst, who is featured throughout as Danny's interviewer, his present, kooky therapist & even Lorraine Warren, the ghostbuster, is featured, meeting Danny for the 1st time since age 7. There are others who declined to be interviewed (why, because it was a horror or a hoax?) & others who were scared off (again, by what, being outed for harboring lies or due to genuine fear of a real horror?) Those facts made it all more compelling to watch.
For the last paragraph alone, I think it's worth a watch, even if one finds it nonsense mumbo-jumbo... just to hear Danny's & everyone's recollections/assertions on what did & didn't happen in Amityville.
4* out of 5 (especially since it's now available as a library borrow, free of charge).
"The Final". A great movie on netflix that makes you think. I loved the nod/link to "Audition" in one of the scenes.
