Great, thank you for all the info, F2 & the link. And, I didn't know anything about Criterion, so I'm glad for the info.
Great news there's a commentary by a film scholar (professors, critics)... those are my favorites, because they look at all aspects of the film & often have interesting tidbits of not commonly known info, with which to titillate listeners. The director's commentaries are normally wonderful, as well (especially Michael Mann, because they talk continually & add nuances as to why they shot a certain scene in a particular way, how the location is important, why it was necessary to use a certain actor/color/dialogue/prop/location).
The most awful ones are the writers (they seem to think each & every one of their words & sentences is an utter masterpiece, so only speak of their finished product... bloody boring), actors (they're mezmorized with themselves, so are quiet & just watch themselves onscreen or think they're too cool for school & do a lot of inside-joking around, which leaves the audience out of the commentary process) & anyone behind the scenes, from the makeup dept, costumers or cameramen, etc. (they're too shy & need to be prodded to speak, not offering much to enhance our knowledge of behind of the scenes process).
I sometimes dislike a movie, but love the commentary. In all actuality, I've only heard a few commentaries which were utter bores. The vast majority are quite interesting.
Thanks again!
some of the best commentaries that i've seen were criterion collection on akira kurosawa films. seven samurai, of course, and yojimbo, sanjuro.
A lesser known gem called "The town that dreaded sundown " about the Texarkana moonlight murder. Part documentary and part horror film it predated Halloween and Friday the 13th and was creepy in part being based on real events.
heaven knows, mr. allison (1957), directed by john huston, starring deborah kerr, robert mitchum. 10 years after black narcissus (1947), deboray kerr again plays a nun and is still a knockout. john huston, so it's based on the novel.
m. hulot's holiday (1953), directed by jacques tati. two thumbs ups. b&w french comedy. director is the main character and goes on a holiday. anyone would like this film.

I LOVE that movie! I watched it with my mum a few times, years ago. Funny, I was just thinking this past weekend that I'd like to see it again. The DVD I borrowed from the library had a forward by Michael Palin from Monty Python, which is what got me interested in the first place.
That scene of the crowd running up & down the stairs & back again for the train had me in stitches. Great movie, F2.
The 400 Blows...for like the 100th time. Love it!!
The entire Antoine Doinel cycle is excellent (with maybe the exception of Love on the Run). Stolen Kisses and Bed & Board are two films I have watched many times and always enjoy! Truffaut's sympathetic eye for the quirks and obsessions of everyday people is really top shelf. He's pretty much my favorite director.

the intro was great, and i remember that scene. when they first go down the stairs someone drops something on the platform. so much stuff going on in the scenes i'll have to watch this again - maybe in the spring. yes, it'll make a good spring movie viewing.
