Really rich people drive old mid-level cars that won't draw any attention to them. That doctor's family in CT that was murdered by two recently released criminals? Their attention was drawn by the fact that the mother and daughter were driving a nice fancy new SUV.

I don't think many poor people -or indeed young people -can afford to buy an Audi. You must be very young yourself and don't know much about the real world.

Can't blame the car for that, can you?

I personally think people driving the beat up Mercedes with shined up tires looked ridiculous.

I have anecdotal evidence that really rich people don't give an eff what they drive as long as its comfortable and reliable. Mom is a paralegal at a real estate law firm. Lots of ridiculously rich people come in there. They drive anything from a Civic to a Focus, to a 3 series or a Bentley.
Rich people are not a homegeneous mass.

The reason people I know buy Mercedes is because of looks and comfort.
The reason people I know buy BMW is performance and some weird idea that it's some 'driver's machine' (snore).
The reason people I know buy Lexus is because they are reliable and have comfort and good tech.
The reason people I know buy Lambo/Ferrari/AM/Bentley is because they can and they get enjoyment out of it. Interestingly, none of these people keep the cars for very long. They are always switching them out.
The reason people I know buy Porsche is classic driving experience or midlife crisis.
The reason people I know buy Audi is because they don't know better.

I could buy any of those cars and I will stick with American for now, thanks.

A $90,000 car leased is over $1k a month.

Just do simple math to get a ball park figure:

$90,000 car with 60% residual for 36 months (high for a luxury car, but lets be conservative...usually around 50%), means the car is worth $54,000 in 3 years. You are paying for $36,000 in "depreciation" over the 3 years, which is exactly $1,000/month. This doesn't include interest (money factor) and taxes. Easilly over $1200 a month to lease a high end car.

FYI, I make around $100k year (not including my wife's RN income) and I drive a $29k Hyundai Sonata that I lease for $350/mo. I would feel snobby driving a new high end brand car, too many of my employees and co-workers who make far less would not have a favorable opinion. My boss makes over $200k and drives a '06 Accord but has a '07 Corvette in the garage of his $500k house he rarely drives to work.

Personally, I would need to be a power attorney or a doctor to drive a car worth over $50k. It just draws too much attention, which I don't want anything to do with. I also have other places to put that kind of money, such as my home and investments. But I don't hate people that do, I fully understand live life to the fullest and driving an expensive car does it for some people. I am tempted to get a new Taurus SHO which has a $45k MSRP, but draws less attention than a cheaper G37 or A4, IMO.

2012 Toyota Highlander Crossover SUV Lease. $299/Mo. plus tax for 36 months. $1995 Down Payment (Excludes title, tax, license & registration fees).

New 2012 Highlander Model #6942 Expires July 9th 2012 Net Cost: 26,488* MSRP $29,312 Buy for: $26,488 After Factory Rebate OR Lease for $299/month* Dealer Discount $1824 | TMS Factory Rebate $1000 | $1,995 due at signing LEASE DETAILS: *36 month closed end lease. Security deposit waived. Lessee responsible for lease and mileage in excess of 12,000 miles per year at 15Ë per mile. Lease through Toyota Financial Services.*All advertised prices exclude government fees, license, registration and taxes, and a dealer document preparation fee of $55.
$1995 down / 36 = $55 a month. So it's really $354/month. Doesn't include tax, would be another $10-15/month depending on your local tax rate. Still cheaper than financing $26k+tax for 5 years at 2.5% or even 0%.

As mentioned above, never put money down on a lease. If you total your car, insurance will not reimburse you for any cap cost reductions ($ down).

I don't care how crappy Audis look, Mr T. My point is poor people can't afford to buy an Audi. Are you familiar with the concept of money at all? Cars aren't just pretty pictures in car magazines. They cost money, you see.
